Workshop topic: How can we enrich science education to promote hazard literacy?
Dr. Russell Tytler is a Deakin Distinguished Professor and Chair in Science Education at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. With an academic background in physics teaching and education, his research has focused extensively on how students learn, reason, and engage with science.
His work spans science and mathematics education, STEM curriculum and policy, socioscientific reasoning, school–community partnerships, and the use of multimodal representations to support scientific reasoning and learning. He has also contributed to science curriculum development and teacher professional learning initiatives across Australia.
Professor Tytler has led and contributed to numerous Australian Research Council (ARC) and other research projects. His recent work includes interdisciplinary approaches to mathematics and science education, bringing contemporary scientific research and development into schools to strengthen climate change education, and professional learning programs for teachers working outside their original subject specialisations.
His international contributions include serving on the Science Expert Group for PISA 2015 and PISA 2025 and representing the OECD in international discussions on STEM skills. He also served as Deputy Chair of the Australian Council of Learned Academies’ STEM: Country Comparisons project. Professor Tytler is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
