My name is Richard Moore, I’m a first year PhD student at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology where I’m conducting research on the diversity of Lauraceous plant species in Myanmar.
I am studying the species diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Lauraceous plant species within Myanmar focussing on the Tribe Laureae, an evolutionarily complex group containing the genera Actinodaphne, Iteadaphne, Laurus, Lindera, Litsea, Neolitsea, Sassafras and Umbellularia.
The family Lauraceae is of great ecological and economical importance with species providing important habitats and food sources for pollinating insects, in addition to their value for medicines, culinary uses and building materials. Despite the importance of this group of plants and the diversity of species present, little research has been done to fully understand the diversity of species present in Myanmar. Furthermore, evolutionary relationships within this family remain poorly understand. Therefore, I aim in my research to provide a phylogenetically supported taxonomic review of species present in Myanmar in order to accurately determine the species diversity within this region whilst also providing a clearer understanding of their evolutionary relationships. Alongside this an assessment of species distributions will also help us to better understand the geographical range of species in an area long viewed as the missing part of the puzzle in terms of our understanding of the plant diversity of Southeast Asia.
