The Kathak dance traces its origin back to 400 BCE to the bhakti movement and was performed in the courts of the northern Indian kingdoms.
The Natya Shastra, credited to the sage Bharata, is the earliest extant document that contains the origins of Kathak.
These Kathakkars, or storytellers, dispersed their art of storytelling from kingdom to kingdom and from villages to hamlets.
They occasionally made temples their rest places and here they used to unwind the great epics of Hindu traditions by giving it a classical touch.
This set the base for evolution of Kathak as a temple dance focusing on mythology and epic tales.
