Having the aim to meet the objective of providing an enabling environment to the private entrepreneurs/investors to invest in agric activities and agro-allied industries, Enugu state government had already keyed into the nation’s Staple Crop Processing Zones ( SCPZs ) policy. The state has one (1) of the four (4) of the country’s established SCPZs. The name of the zone is Adani-Omor Staple Crop Processing Zone.
The focus of SCPZ is to attract private sector agribusinesses to set up processing plants in areas of high food production, to process commodities into food products.
In this zone, there is in abundance a special breed of rice paddy called the Marker Assisted Selection (MAS)- a DNA marker breeding technology output with very low content of amylose. This varieties that have the qualities of “Jasmine Rice” of Thailand and “Basmati Rice”of India.
The SCPZ also link farmers and other types of producers in clusters to food manufacturing plants. Enugu state government intend to develop an agricultural investment code in partnership with the Federal government, state government and with would be investors.
