Where is Taiwan?

Taiwan is located in East Asia, at the junction of the East and South China Seas. It is about 130 km off the coast of southeastern China. The island is roughly 395 km long and 144 km wide, with a total area of 35,900 square km. The island's climate is between subtropical and tropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The majority of the population is Chinese. The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese, and Taiwanese Hokkien is also widely spoken.

Taiwan is a mountainous island with over 285 peaks over 9,800 ft (3,000 meters) above sea level. The highest mountain is Yu Shan (Jade Mountain, 3,952 m above sea level). It is also the tallest mountain in East Asia. Mountaineering is one of the most popular activities for many Taiwanese. Taiwan is also exceedingly safe and is well known for its hospitality as a tourist destination.
