SPINA BIFIDA
Spina Bifida is a condition that affects the spine that occurs at birth. It is a neural tube birth defect caused by the incomplete development of the spine during the early months of pregnancy.
HYDROCEPHALUS
Hydrocephalus is caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. Hydrocephalus can affect anyone, at any time, from unborn babies to older adults.
The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery where a shunt is implanted to help drain the fluid. A shunt is NOT a cure, and there are often complications of shunt failures leading to multiple brain surgeries over a patient’s lifetime.
THERE IS NO CURE for hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Both are life altering, life threatening conditions and if left untreated, can be fatal.
The impact and challenges on a person with these conditions can range from mild to severe. Complications can include issues with paralysis, mobility, bowel and bladder function, vision, memory, and learning challenges.
