Chapter 17
"The message"
Ilustración: Hybrid-Kira (2022)
- "Capitol Radio, The official radio station of the European Metropolis! We request the help of the citizens to locate the following missing persons: Tyler Hopper. 19-year-old male. White skin, ginger hair, green eyes. Height: 1.80 meters (6' ft) approximately. Thin complexion. He was last seen at his home, in sector five Southeast, on the afternoon of June 30th. Any information must be communicated to the local authorities."
The group of Warriors surrounding the old battery-powered radio turned violently to look at me, and after a few drunken giggles, they toast to me, causing every other citizen in the open dining hall to raise their beer mugs in the air, and in unison, they joined in the spontaneous cheering.
- For Tyler Hopper! To your health boy!
My unexpected protagonism makes me a little embarrassed, but that didn't stop me from raising my drink and giving thanks for the toast along with them, even if I was toasting with nothing but bland apple juice in my glass.
- Are you serious? Did those clowns on the Metropolis just notice you're not there?! Ha!, wow, now I see why you don't miss that place too much... Those people don't deserve you, they never did. -Iker was indignant, but not surprised. He seemed to know enough about the Metropolis not to have any sympathy for its inhabitants- You're better off here. You have food, shelter... and most importantly, you have your absolutely awesome personal guide. What more could you wish for?
- Huh? I'd really like to meet that guide you're talking about, I don't think I've seen him anywhere yet. -Iker makes a frustrated gesture and gently pushes my entire body with his nose until I almost lie on the ground, all so that I would stop talking nonsense. It was a risk I was willing to take in order to tease him a bit of his innocent ego- Although, to be honest, I didn't even expect anyone to notice that I was missing. Apparently it only took them two weeks to figure it out... -I look down to see that I've spilled what little was left of my drink. An excuse to look away from my friend, who reacts immediately to the change in my voice- ... At least they realized before what my mother would have done. That isn't so bad.
The atmosphere between the two of us became a little more tense than I expected, and Iker had a bit of trouble continuing the conversation at its usual pace. I could see the conflict between his mind and his mouth.
- Oh... I'm sorry if I made you remember something you didn't want to... -Iker apologizes almost immediately, activating an instinctive damage control protocol in me, because the last thing I wanted was to ruin his morning with my problems-
- No no, it's fine Iker, you don't have to apologize, it's just that... I haven't thought about her in a long time... -For years I've avoided her memory like the plague, and the more I did it, the more present she was in my mind, although since my arrival in Cilt her presence has stopped haunting me, which was a slight relief- ... I think that's for the best. It means that now I have more important things to think about, now that I am here, and not in the Metropolis.
- ... I see. She's not the kind of mother you remember fondly, is she?
- No... She's more the type that leaves you, never to return. -The poison in my words is palpable, so much so that I try to wash them out of my mouth by drinking again from my glass, now empty, but that wouldn't be enough to plunge both of us back into unnecessary anguish- ... But that's convenient, you know? It means she's not here to scold me when I order a beer for me alone right now. -I winked at Iker to make sure the sarcasm didn't go unnoticed-
- What are you saying? You don't even drink alcohol! - Iker can be very cunning at times, but I must admit, he is just as dumb in picking up sarcasm directed at him. And now that I've been exposed in front of everyone thanks to him, I just change the focus of our conversation to something else that doesn't involve much thought on both of our parts, and in the end I reserve from drinking at the fear of a more than avoidable hangover, the result of my total inexperience and lack of taste for alcohol-
Breakfast passes relatively quietly, with sporadic conversations between the two from time to time. It was a relief to have him back, because I was beginning to miss his long monologues of his adventures in the neutral lands, of which I take the right of judging for myself which ones sounded real, and which ones seem to have no other purpose than to surprise me with his heroic deeds. In any case, I would listen to him talk as long as necessary, since he himself seemed happy that he no longer had a tube in his trachea assisting his breathing.
The ease with which Iker crushes the bones in his snack, putting up the same resistance as a potato chip between his sharp teeth, makes me a little anxious. I try to divert my attention to anything else around me to keep the unpleasant sound from lingering in my system any longer, and a new voice not far from us manages to capture my attention for a moment.
- Excuse me, I'm looking for Tyler, Marcus's son. Do you know if he and his guide Iker are around here?
The open-air dining hall was quiet enough for me to identify my name immediately. A hybrid, a Lotus Exige, Hunter, whose dark green skin surely helped him during his missions in the forest, has nervously approached the group of Warriors in possession of the radio, but seeing that those individuals had drank so much beer that they are barely able to speak with some coherence, the young Hunter resigns himself to searching on his own, until he locks eyes with us for a few moments, and his face lights up in hope, quickening his step until he approaches a respectable distance between us.
- Yes, you definitely look like the Tyler I'm looking for... Oh, hi Iker.
- Aegis! -The emphasis on his name makes me realize that both of them already knew each other, but that wouldn't be a surprise to me; Iker must know everyone here- If you want an autograph you will have to wait, there is a whole waiting list of people who want to meet my friend. -Iker doesn't waste an opportunity to show off his role as guide, making me discreetly rolling my eyes at him-
- Maybe another time... -A slight concern on his face makes my skin crawl. Aegis seemed agitated, as if he had been looking for us through Cilt. He locks his eyes with mine once he's caught his breath to speak- General Kassia has sent me to find you, Tyler. The Leaders want to see you and Iker in the Council Dome immediately... It seems to be very important.
Seeing that I am speechless, Iker proceeds to question the Hunter in front of us.
- Did they tell you why they're summoning us? - Iker seemed abnormally interested in knowing the reason for such urgency. I could even tell that he looked somewhat worried about it-
- I didn't have time to ask. As soon as the General asked me to go out and look for you, she was already sending more messengers to call the rest of the Leaders... They are all gathering right now. You better go now.
- But...
- Iker. -I put a hand on his side, intentionally breaking off the conversation for good. There was no time to lose if the Leaders required our presence, but Iker didn't seem to understand, and he was determined to know why this unexpected meeting was for-... We must go Iker, now. They will tell us once we arrive.
Iker hesitates. Why did he do it? His behavior does not help calm my nerves, because he made it look like something very bad was going to happen. Both I and Aegis watch him with uncertainty for a few moments, until finally Iker seems to come to his senses, and after sighing to himself, he resigns himself to opening his closest door to me, in a clear gesture that he should take a seat in its interior. I said a brief goodbye to Aegis, and after taking a somewhat less awkward position in his cramped cabin, my friend set off toward the center of the city, on his way to the Council Dome.
~
We weren't exactly the first to arrive.
As soon as the monumental greenhouse came into view, we could see a corpulent hybrid guarding the doors with peculiar martiality. He was without a doubt an imposing individual; an athletic and robustly built Rally Fighter who shows no reserve in staring anyone who comes too close to the Council Dome. It seems that this hybrid acts as a guard, and his Warrior rank tattooed on both of his doors ends up proving me right. Soon another hybrid identical to him joins him on guard duty. Two hybrids exactly alike... It would be the first time I see a pair of hybrid twins right in front of my eyes.
- Shit... -I hear Iker muttering to himself, slowing down once the dome was already in sight. A shiver ran down his spine, and I couldn't help but feel it. The guards had made him nervous-
- What 's wrong Iker? -I turn back to see the twins, they watch Iker out of the corner of their eyes, and that was enough for them to show a somewhat pretentious attitude towards him, an attitude that was usual in all hybrids and humans who do not know Iker personally. It was possible that that was what bothered him- ... Don't pay attention to them, okay? Remember that you are with me, I will not let anyone say bad things to you while we are together, and you know it. -Iker stops and opens his door without any objection on his part. Once I'm back on solid ground, the guards seem to look away, looking a little embarrassed. It was expected. -You see? Don't worry, whatever we're here for, nothing can...
- They are going to judge me. -Iker didn't take long to express what was really on his mind at that moment, and the reason why he was so unusually silent since we left in the direction of the dome.
- Come on Iker... Who cares what those two big guys think of you? -This was not the usual moment of persecutory paranoia from him... No, this was something serious. Iker was terrified. His pupils contracted until they were almost imperceptible, he folded his only mirror until it almost merged with the rest of his body, and the whole of him seemed to be on the verge of a panic attack- ... Iker?
- Not them... The Leaders. -Iker dug his wheels into the ground he was standing on, refusing to continue, while I could see in his expression those painful memories happening right in front of his eyes. Memories of the day he was exiled- ... I am going to be judged for what happened with Dheera... For failing my mission to protect you... For putting you in danger. -His words destroy any attempt of mine to reassure him. As much as I have refused to listen to his perspective of that accident with Dheera, I had to admit the possibility that what he said was true, and that it is possible that I will witness the trial of my best friend- ... I don't want to be exiled again, Ty... No, I couldn't take it... Not again.
- Friend, please... Calm down. -I hugged him tightly, as if I wanted to rejoin all the pieces in which he was beginning to fracture, which managed to calm him down a bit, and prevent him from losing track of reality- ... They're not going to exile you again, do you hear me? As long as I'm here, I won't let that happen... -I'm beginning to realistically assess his chances...and they're not too good- ...I promise. I'm going to fight for you... just like you've done for me.
It takes a moment, but his breathing begins to slow down. He finally seems to understand that he had no chance of running away from this situation. Now all that remains is to face it, and look the Leaders in the eye once again. I can't imagine what must be going through his head right now. Is he seeing the Leaders' faces of horror and disappointment again when he confessed to killing those poachers? Does he see my father, completely unable to save the hybrid he raised? ... Or is it that he sees Dheera, that fateful day of the attack?
One of the twins seems to receive instructions from inside the dome, and after nodding his head in a concise movement, he turns to see us with the intention of sending a message; We should go in right now.
Iker and I turned to see each other once more. My friend looked pale, eyes wide in terror, scanning his surroundings nervously, waiting for me to say something to ease his anxiety...but the words just couldn't come out of my mouth. The only thing I could offer him was a supportive smile. I wanted to let him know that everything was okay, and that he would be okay. That I would be by his side, no matter what, and that there was no human (or hybrid) force that could stop me from defending him with everything I had. Fortunately, Iker has become especially skilled at reading my expressions. He sighed raggedly, and after reassembling the shattered pieces of his confidence, he silently nodded, and advanced towards the dome like the Warrior he is, fulfilling the mission his Leaders had entrusted to him.
We walked with each other to the thick wooden doors, the only entrance and exit from the home of the legendary orchids of respectable Leader Darius. The Rally Fighter twins make a small bow when they see me, accepting my presence in the Council's domain, which I respond in the same way before pushing the doors, enough so that Iker could enter... but one of the guards gets in Iker's way before he takes a step inside the dome.
- Only Mr. Hopper is allowed in at the moment, I'm sorry, but I have to ask you to wait outside.
That did not make sense, because, for a trial to take place, it is necessary for the accused to be present.
Maybe...we weren't here for a trial.
The doors close before I even have the opportunity to share glances again with Iker, who must be just as confused as I am at that moment. The thick wooden doors generate a powerful and slightly terrifying sound, whose echo is expanded by the special acoustics inside the greenhouse.
For a second I thought I was alone, but a human figure was patiently waiting for me in the center of everything; Edurne, the human Leader of Cilt. She seemed to prefer her lab coat as her favorite everyday accessory, but now a bright and inconspicuous neon orange stain on the bottom of her lab coat has forced her to reluctantly shed her favorite garment, revealing a slim-bodied woman with simple taste in fashion beneath that heavy lab coat.
- Tyler. I'm glad you've arrived so soon, though I'm afraid we'll have to wait for the rest to arrive for a few more moments. -Edurne adjusts her hair again, white and light as the feathers of an albino owl, while she discreetly checks her watch. The ranks tattooed on the backs of both hands were eye-catching, and it's hard not to stare at them- ... They shouldn't be long. Although, to be honest, the delay is justified. This is not an ordinary meeting after all.
- What do you mean by that, Leader Edurne? ... What are we doing here?
Edurne's delicate features are filled with doubt, and even a little anguish upon hearing my words.
- Haven't they told you yet?
- Tell me... What, precisely?
Edurne seems unable to believe it, she bites her lower lip for a few seconds, possibly trying to organize her words, making me even more nervous, because whatever it is shouldn't be easy to say.
- ... -She looks at me with her pale gray eyes, undoubtedly compassionate-... It's about your father. Marcus. We have new information about him.
I wasn't ready.
Those simple words were enough to weaken my legs, and make my throat dry until I was unable to utter a single word. I have no idea what face I had to make for Edurne to break the barriers of personal space, and hold my arm with both of her hands, looking at me with the concern with which a doctor looks at a patient who is about to faint... Well, actually, that's how it felt. Edurne forced me to sit at the foot of the planters on the inner perimeter of the trial area, as I was starting to feel a little dizzy.
- ... Tell me... Is he...?
- He is alive. Don't worry, he's fine. -I put a hand to my mouth, embarrassed that that was my first thought when hearing from him... but it was inevitable. I feared the worst from the moment she mentioned his name. But luckily she was quick to not aggravate the situation- A Hunter called for an extraordinary meeting. She claims to have important information about him and the conditions in which the Vortex are holding him captive right now... That's why you're here. We wanted you to be present to hear this information with us. As his son, you have the right to know before anyone else. -Edurne wraps her hands around mine for a moment, silently appreciating the ranks that adorned them- ... These are your father's ranks. When he disappeared, I had to take his place... -She missed him as well, as did Kassia, and Iker, and everyone in Cilt. It was clear that this was just as important news for her as it was for me- This is the first time we've had relevant information about him since he disappeared... I hope this brings us a little closer to bringing him back.
- ...That is the only thing I wish for, my Leader. -Her thin, cool hand touches my face for a moment to comfort me, or maybe to make sure I was no longer on the verge of collapse. Everyone here treats me with inordinate confidence, as if they've known me since I was a child-
The sudden slam of the doors makes me jump in fright, while Edurne simply stood up to verify that who was now entering the dome was one of her comrades, specifically Leander. The jovial human Leader enters the greenhouse with the confidence of one entering his own home. He takes off the pair of tough leather gloves that he had been wearing up to that point, and wipes the sweat from his hands directly on his belly, which protruded slightly from his silhouette by wearing a dirty overall, which was a bit tight around the abdomen, but that wasn't something he tried to hide. He unzips the top of his working attire to allow him better mobility, and stretches to release the tension in his shoulders. He and Edurne greet each other by bumping elbows, and once the sweaty man was more comfortable, he couldn't help but ask the reason for such a strange meeting when he saw that I had been summoned as well.
- And... Why the urgency? Are we going to break relations with the Metropolis at last? I mean, it wouldn't be a bad idea, they haven't sent us supplies for a long time, and the citizens are upset... -Leander complains humorously, although his naive smile didn't last long-
- There is new information from Marcus and the Vortex, and immediate action is required if we are to gain that advantage. That's why we're here, Kast. -Edurne answers him emphatically calling Leander by his last name, making him reconsider his words, turning to see me again in the process-
- Oh... I see. -Leander offers me a hand to help me up from the ground. His handshake is strong, indelicate, but extremely energetic and with good intentions. It didn't take any effort for him to pull me up until I found myself on my feet again. -Nice to see you again boy, despite the circumstances. You will see that everything will be okay in the end. -He gives me a couple of pats on my left shoulder, which I feared would injure me with each impact of his thick hands, typical of a man who has dedicated his whole life to heavy work. His carelessness was easily forgiven by his charisma, and his ability to lift anyone's spirits, even to someone like me-
Mere seconds passed before a third member of the Council made an appearance. Kassia entered urgently while maintaining her elegant demeanor, sighing when seeing those of us who were already inside the dome... although I wasn't sure if that had been a sigh of relief, or concern.
- Good morning Edurne, Leander... Hello Tyler. -Kassia greets her comrades neutrally, but she spends a little of her time giving me a somewhat more personal greeting than the rest. Immediately afterwards, she turns almost completely, inspecting every corner of the interior of the dome- ... Where is Darius?
- It shouldn't take him long, you know that he is always the first to arrive at Council meetings... Well, at least ordinary meetings. -Edurne answers to try to reassure the stressed hybrid, who did not stop moving from one side to another, trying to organize her thoughts as they arose-
- I just hope it doesn't take too long... The Hunter is already on her way here, and I don't like the idea of keeping her waiting. -Something stops her completely, she inspects the people around her again, and she turns to look me in the eye, visibly confused-... Why isn't Iker here? I thought I told my messenger that both of you had been wanted.
- T-the guards didn't let him pass, I don't know... -
- Why didn't they let him in? -Kassia fixes her eyes like daggers on both human Leaders, waiting for an answer. I wasn't used to seeing Kassia that way, it made me nervous, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal for Edurne, who didn't change her tone of voice for a second when responding to her comrade-
- The Warrior is not authorized to hear the information first hand, he is not...
- He's on the list of people close to Marcus, as well as Tyler and us here right now. He has a right to be here right now. -A loud banging on the dome doors draws everyone's attention, and makes me feel like my stomach is struggling to contain the anxiety. Those present in the dome remain silent, until Kassia decides to proceed anyway-... There is no time for this, we will have to start the meeting without Darius.
In an orderly manner, the three Leaders proceed to take their places on the high dais. Edurne and Leander have climbed some stairs to one side of the grandstand, while Kassia makes use of the hydraulic lift located just behind the concrete structure where the human Leaders have already taken their positions. Edurne has at her disposal a modern digital desk and a simple office chair to sit on, while Leander has preferred to arrange his allotted space on the dais with cushions and blankets, making sitting on the floor less uncomfortable for him, and thus having a more intimate and personal perspective of what was happening in front of him in the courtroom. The assigned places for Kassia and Darius were not delimited between them, probably because both had no problem meeting skin to skin.
I remain on the sidelines of the judgment zone as a simple spectator. I was so stunned by the current situation that it was not difficult for me to keep quiet, all in order to listen with the whole of my being the little, if not much, information that has been brought back to the Leaders.
... I wish Iker was here.
The doors are fully open, kept this way with the help of the guards outside. The dim light of the cloudy morning makes it difficult to see who was approaching. The only thing that was visible of that hybrid individual was their red skin, but it was not necessary to see it in detail to know that it was not the missing Leader. This was a hybrid female, a sleek Acura NSX with streamlined curves and cherry-red colored skin. The hybrid, who humbly carried her Medic ranks, bows slightly as she enters the dome and meets her Leaders face to face, who look at her expectantly.
- My name is Aria, and I am the Medic in charge of the recovery of Hunter Iris, my patient. She arrived at Cilt a week ago seriously injured, presumably from a Vortex attack. She has regained consciousness in her entirety today, and she expressed to me and the rest of the Medics the urgency of obtaining an audience with you, my Leaders. -Aria turns toward the entrance, her eyes following the Hunter who was being carried on a wheeled platform, like a stretcher for hybrids. The condition of the Hunter in question takes our breath away from everyone in the room- ... She is still recovering, so I ask you to be as brief as possible during the interrogation. I'll have to take her back to the hospital once she's done with the session.
- Thank you, Aria. You can wait outside the dome. We will do our best not to take too long. -Kassia appreciates the dedication of the Medic, and she leaves the dome as soon as she is suggested, but not before inspecting her patient one last time-
Iris. She was the injured hybrid I tried to help that day. The day of the Zeingen when Darius and Zenda put on a show like no other. The day that Dheera attacked... The day that Iker and I were also sent to the hospital. Corvette Stingray, that was the only thing I could conclude about her physical appearance for now, because her white skin showed such shades of bloody colors in her bruises and half-healed wounds that it was impossible to take my attention off of them. The poor huntress had survived the harassment of the infamous Dheera... Although just barely.
- It is a relief to have you in front of us despite the current situation, Iris... we are sorry that you have to interrupt your rest to come here, I promise you that we will not waste your time.-
Iris opens her beautiful yellow eyes, turning to look at Kassia directly. Kassia's expression tightens as she empathizes with Iris's pain, and Iris puts a subtle smile of relief on her bruised face.
- Thank you... my General...-her voice was faint and tired, but it was easy to hear thanks to the good acoustics of the dome when it was completely closed-
- For now we're still waiting for Darius, but since it doesn't look like he'll be here soon, maybe we should start without...-
The clear sound of a hybrid braking hard on the ground just outside the dome puts everyone on alert again. Some murmurs, almost imperceptible, are captured by my ear as I am closer to the entrance than the rest.
- Is everyone there?
- Yes my Leader, they only wait for you.
- Good.
A deep sigh is heard from the other side of the doors, and moments later, an exhausted Darius daintily enters the dome, trying to hide his slight gasp. Despite the fact that his breathing was rough and deep, and his body seemed to shine with the small beads of sweat that had been generated on his skin, Kassia looked at him with special relief.
- Sorry for the delay, I was at the opposite side of the city when I got the news. -Darius strode with usual composure on his way to take his place on the dais. Everyone in the room has their eyes on him, everyone except Iris, who has a hard time turning her body far enough to see Darius. Seeing that Iris wanted to make eye contact with him, Darius hurried to stand in front of the Hunter to keep her from moving too much. His gaze changes when he sees the state of the hybrid, and for the first time, I could see anguish in his stoic features- Iris...?-
- Leader Darius... I... - Iris can't resist anymore and lets out tears in front of Darius, who didn't hesitate for a second to offer his help to the injured Huntress, letting the latter rest her face on LaFerrari's side, just like a supportive hug- I-I'm sorry... My Leader... I was weak, they forced me to leave my squad to deliver this message... I should have protected them, I should have protected them with my life.-
The heartbreaking scene of Iris seeking Darius's comfort and forgiveness, while Darius could do nothing but accompany her in her pain, had made Kassia and Leander shed a couple of tears, while Edurne closed her eyes and looked away. We were in the presence of a Hunter who had lost her entire squad to the Vortex, just like Iker before his exile, who lost his squad to poachers. It takes a few painful minutes for Iris to control her breathing, while the hybrid Leader stays static, and will stay there as long as necessary.
- Easy, it's alright. Nothing that happened out there was your fault. Everything's fine. -His words of his take effect on her to comfort and take her out of the torment of her mind for a moment. It was incredible to see how the same hybrid capable of inflicting terror in the heart of the Vortex, is at the same time capable of reassuring the most damaged patient. It was something special in him-... I'm very sorry about what happened to your companions... But hope hasn't been lost yet. The tracking team recently found clues about them. A rescue mission will be ordered immediately to follow their tracks, and bring them back as soon as possible.
Iris backs away a little, a subtle signal to Darius that she no longer needs the support of his body. The broken Huntress spoke gently towards her Leaders, understanding how much they cared for her at the moment.
- I appreciate it, Leader Darius... but I'm not here for that reason. I know that my squad is still alive... or at least, they were still alive the day I was forced to separate from them. -Her own words of hers manage to make her sentimental again, but she fought against her tears to fulfill her self-imposed mission; Delivering the information to her Leaders was all she needed to do at the moment. As soon as Darius was certain that the Corvette no longer needed him by her side, he hurried to take his place on the dais with his beloved, who found relief in leaning her side against her partner's- ...I'm here, because I have a message... -Iris swept her eyes around everyone present, landing directly on Leader Darius-... A message from Neyzan, in person, addressed to you.
A thousand emotions crossed the hybrid Leader's features at the same time upon hearing the cursed name. His mirrors threatened to show everyone how much this had thrown him off balance. But he resisted, at the last second. He filled his immense lungs with air, and did his best to regain his composure. He couldn't afford to show weakness, not in front of someone who would risk her life for her Leaders, and who blindly trusted the Council's abilities to handle such a situation.
- ... What kind of message, specifically?
- A proposal. He described it as an "exchange"... He is willing to give Marcus back to us in exchange for something he needs, and that we have.
- Have you been able to see my father?... How is he? He's hurt - As much as I tried, I couldn't keep quiet any longer. My urge to know anything about him outweighs my inner voice that compelled me to let the Leaders ask the questions, and not interrupt. I walk towards Iris until I cling to the edges of her transporter stretcher, almost begging her to answer my questions. She can do nothing but direct her pair of golden orbs towards me, instantly recognizing my face...smiling compassionately-
- ... He's fine, Tyler. He's safe... And he knows you're here.
Thirteen years. That's how long I've had to wait since I last saw it with my own eyes. Thirteen years have been worth every damn second, just for this moment.
He is alive... and he knows that I am here, waiting for him.
In the absence of words to thank her sacrifice to bring back the news, I placed my hand on the cold skin of her face, making her close her eyes for a moment, in which she seemed to have forgotten about her injuries for a few seconds. Words were not needed to express what this meant to everyone.
- I saw him with my own eyes. The Vortex have kept Marcus safe despite being their prisoner. The time he has spent out there has changed the way he looks. I must admit... It was hard for me to recognize him when I saw him, but he is without a doubt the same man. And he regained his will as soon as he learned you were here in Cilt.
- You mentioned something about an exchange... What else can you tell us about it? -Kassia was impatient, she wanted to know the rest of the information, as well as everyone else-
Iris sighed to herself, and after a monumental effort for her still-sore muscles, she was able to open her left door, revealing her seemingly intact interior.
- Neyzan told me to give you this... It appears to be some kind of recording. I don't know what's in it, but he seemed very interested in you having it.
Being right next to her, I look to realize that inside her cabin, an almost imperceptible object that seems to be a memory unit had been protected in the safety of Iris's body all this time. The little device is immediately familiar to me; it is a generic storage unit, used mainly in video cameras. Without even thinking about it, I go to grab the little memory on my own, until a hand suddenly lands on my shoulder, preventing me from taking it.
- No no, don't touch it. Let me inspect it first. -Leander puts back on the leather gloves he's carried with him since he entered the dome, and with some difficulty from his thick fingers, he manages to grip the little memory gingerly. It seems that, when it comes to Neyzan and the Vortex, no precaution is superfluous-
Leander visually reviews the memory for a few more moments before handing it over to Edurne, who once in possession of the precious object, and verifying that it was not a trick planned by the Vortex, waits for Darius's approval to play the content inside the device. The LaFerrari nods firmly, after glancing sideways at Kassia, who hasn't blinked once, determined to confront what was hidden inside such an inoffensive device.
Edurne plugs the device into one of the ports on her desk. The floor directly in front of me opens up a few inches, revealing a thin slot that runs the full width of the trial area. A holographic curtain materializes in front of my eyes, emerging directly from the ground to several meters high, forming a wall of light that divides the Leaders from the spectators.
It takes a few seconds for the device to reproduce the recording, seconds that I felt eternal and that, at the same time, I wished that they would never be present. I feel my heart pounding my chest mercilessly, and my hands shake uncontrollably.
There is no image in the hologram. A simple spectrogram was the only thing that confirmed that the file was being played; A simple audio recording. The sound graph remains relatively quiet for a few moments. The rustle of dry leaves and a subtle breathing was all that was heard on the recording, until the spectrogram brings with it gigantic mountains on its graph.
- "Greetings, Your Majesties of Cilt." -
It needed no introduction. He brazenly speaks to the Council in his raw, malicious voice, drilling his harsh, exalted speech into my head. The glass of the Dome seems to tremble at Darius's impulsive growl; serious and full of anger. There was no doubt that this was Neyzan himself, the lord of the Vortex.
- "I hope the messenger arrived in one piece and that she delivered this to you personally. Tho... if not, I'm very sorry, not all my homing pigeons make it anyway, do they?"
Neyzan speaks with cruel morbidity, making Iris shiver in place, while tears escape from her yellow eyes without any possibility of stopping them.
- "But anyway. You're probably wondering why I've bothered to send you a message personally. Well, consider this a formal invitation to... do business. As good neighbors that we are, from time to time we must be humble and accept the fact that we need a little help from others. That is why, for the first time I see myself in the need to negotiate. There in Cilt everyone seems to be very happy, right? ... Without hunger nor tempest, but at what cost? You occupy all the hunting territory where prey is plentiful, leaving the rest of us with your leftovers... Starving us."
The selfishness of the tyrant leader suffocates for a moment, giving way to resentment and helplessness caused by the precarious living conditions of him and his people, but even that is not enough to soften the Leaders.
- "...But interestingly enough, it turns out that I have something that you guys want back, desperately. And since I am a very generous hybrid, I am willing to negotiate with you. You don't believe me? That's alright, maybe you do believe him... Marcus, Marcus, my old friend, would you like to say a few words for your friends in Cilt?"
Edurne gets up violently from her seat, pushing the chair until it almost falls off the stage, Kassia's face turns pale when listening to Neyzan's recording, and I get closer and closer to the wall of light, begging, asking for a chance I'll be able to hear his voice... but the spectrogram stays flat, with no indication to prepare me to hear my father again.
- "Really? After so much time away from home, aren't you going to even say "hello"? ...You've become a selfish old hermit, Marcus Hopper...tho that doesn't surprise me. Too bad, I thought you'd at least want to let your son know that you haven't forgotten him."
- "... What? ...That's not..."
- "Oh, you didn't know? Your dear son is there right now, in Cilt... And I would bet anything that he has come looking for you."
- "No... No! Please no...!"
The violent audio stops abruptly, only to immediately resume with the same calmness with which Neyzan has begun to speak. The audio was cut and modified for convenience, that was a fact. Neyzan wanted to prevent my father from saying more than necessary.
- "As you have already seen, the old man is safe and sound, and I have already decided the right price for him: I want access to the bunker adjoining Vortex territory in the extreme south, I will take possession of all the supplies that are in there, and I require an access key for this. I know very well the protocol to follow to delegate said keys, so any attempt by you to falsify it and pass it off as genuine will result in the immediate death of the old man. On top of that, I want ten kilometers around said bunker as hunting territory for the exclusive use of my clan. I know I said we would do business... but this is not subject to negotiation. Give me what I want, and you'll have Marcus back. The exchange will take place the day after the next New Moon, in the heart of the abandoned city of Kiem. I don't want tricks. There won't be another day to make the exchange, so you better be present... Unless you want to keep a father away from his son indefinitely, but that will be up to you, Your Majesties."
"I am looking forward to doing business with you."
The recording ends.
I was puzzled. I didn't recognize my father's voice. Seeing the four leaders in momentary shock was enough to trust that they did recognize him, and that there is no doubt that the man on said recording was indeed Marcus Hopper.
- When the Vortex attacked us, and we were taken to their territory as prisoners, he had already made the recording. -Iris explains to the Leaders- That's when I saw Marcus, and I was able to verify that he wasn't hurt...although I only got to see him briefly. Neyzan then had the same squad choose one of us to return to Cilt carrying the message, and they... They chose me... My friends saved my life. -Tears rolled down her battered cheeks once again, not caring that it hurt, because she simply couldn't make them stop anymore, as well as the notorious sob in her broken voice-... I'm very sorry for what is happening... None of this should be like this ... I am sorry...
I do my best to comfort Iris without losing my cool in the process. There is a minute of silence, during which the Leaders pay respect to the broken Huntress before them. There was nothing to say...and there was a lot to take in.
Leander steps down from the dais once more, relieving me of the task of looking after Iris. The session has exhausted her physically and mentally beyond what the Leaders had considered, and they decided it would be best to call her Medic again so that Iris could be taken back to the hospital. The Huntress thanks the Leaders for their time, and with a farewell from the depths of her wounded heart, she departs for the medical bay, accompanied by her caretaker. The doors have barely closed again, and that was enough to fill my lungs with pure courage, pushing me to reply assertively towards the Leaders.
- We must go save him! It's the only chance we'll have to bring him back. -They look at each other, unable to express support for my desperate pleas-
- ... This is out of the question. It's too dangerous. -Darius replies keeping his eyes lowered, devoid of any hope-
- ... What? -The fact that the Supreme Leader of Cilt did not support my cause caused me a deep pain, but seeing that Kassia did nothing to change his opinion, it simply broke my heart- ... Kassia? ... You said you would go for him as soon as the smallest opportunity presented itself... You promised.
I know I promised, but Darius's right, Tyler... This is too dangerous for any of us. You don't know Neyzan, not like I do, and you have no idea what he's capable of. -I'm speechless. I can't help but feel betrayed, but knowing how much she cares for my father, it would be illogical for her to be giving up such an opportunity for no good reason. I try to stay calm, giving the Leaders some breathing room to wonder about the details of the message-
- The ruins of Kiem is the middle ground between Cilt hunting territory and Vortex territory, it is part of what we call "neutral lands". That's where the exchange will take place, and according to what Neyzan said, the day after the new Moon will be exactly... in three days. That leaves us with just enough time to prepare an exploration team, and get there with time to spare. -Edurne types with inhuman dexterity on her digital desk, and being in control of the holographic wall in front of us, she sends to project a large-scale map of the surrounding sectors. Cilt is in the center of everything, looking like a small and insignificant town compared to the enormous distances shown on the map. To the North is the Metropolis, imposing its total domination of the territory with its empty borders. The land is dotted with multiple urban areas independent of the capital, each and every one of them completely uninhabited, and one of them, was the ghost town of Kiem, which was slightly larger than Cilt-
- Although the mission seems to be feasible in terms of time and distance, I am not willing to cede more territory to the Vortex. -Darius objects with authority, thinking of all the possible consequences that such a mission can have in the long term- The Hunters can barely supply the city with what they find, and the Metropolis has stopped sending supplies for months. This is non-negotiable. Also, we are not even sure that Neyzan is going to fulfill his part of the deal, there is not a single guarantee or hint that he is not laying a more than obvious trap for us... We also do not know if he is really going to bring Marcus with him. The only way to tell would be getting a simple sign of life from Marcus's chip, but his signal has stayed out of range ever since...
As if our prayers have been answered, a small, dim, irregularly flickering red light appears to the south of the map from deep within the forest. A single line of descriptive text accompanies it; "Marcus Hopper"
- ...That's impossible...-Darius gasps, as do I. The signal seemed to be weak, but if it were genuine, it would be more than enough to change the course of this meeting- ... Edurne, check the error range of the signal.
- The error range is 50%. The signal must be picked up by at least one other tracker to be confirmed. -Eternal minutes of waiting pass, indifferent to the palpable anxiety in the warm air inside the dome. Until the signal shows up again, revitalized-... 30% and going down... Now it's 15%.
- It's him. -Kassia's voice fills with hope, while we all watched perplexed as the range of error descended more and more, until reaching absolute zero-
- We have confirmation from the control center. The signal is authentic. -Edurne looks expectantly at Darius, who seemed to be babbling in complete silence to himself, unable to articulate a single word-... Darius?
- ... -Kassia snaps him out of his brief shock by nudging his side gently. He just stares at the holographic map with an unreadable expression. Without looking at anyone else-... We must... Discuss this. In private...- With Darius being unable to collect his mind at the moment, Kassia gives me a confident look, and she nods silently at me. The message was clear, she was asking me to get out of the dome-
Without further ado, I turn around, seeing for the last time that blinking red light on the map which might have been insignificant at any other time, but right now, it had become my only hope.
I put both hands on the doors, and before I even have to make the slightest effort, they are fully opened by the guardian twins, who maintain a stoic and neutral gesture to anyone who enters and leaves the Council Dome.
I did not expected at all to find Iker right in front of me, waiting all this time for him to come out.
- And... What happened there? Did they mention anything about me? -My gaze was lost, surely looking into my mind, which was so saturated that it seemed empty, and I had no words to express what had just happened. I dropped to my knees on the ground, and hugged my body over his nose, startling him by not expecting such a reaction from me- H-hey! Ty... What's wrong? -I'm speechless. My body begins to tremble, and my eyes finally seem to have an outlet for everything that I hadn't allowed myself to express, and Iker could feel it- ... Hey... Everything's fine... -My friend understood, and he simply approached to help and support me, without demanding explanations from me, offering his unconditional help-
"... It's okay."
----------------------------------------------------------
At least a dozen more people have been individually called by Leaders over the course of hours; Warriors, Scientists, Hunters, and Medics alike, as well as unranked citizens who seemed to be of use to the case that continued to be discussed relentlessly. They were in and out as quickly as required.
We're not allowed to stay within twenty meters of the Council Dome unless called, but I wouldn't leave even if I had to wait for the rest of my life.
I need answers.
Iker has been attentive to my needs throughout this time, making long trips back and forth to bring me water and food. I had no appetite, but I forced myself to nibble on the chicken sandwich that my friend got for me until I was finally able to finish it, although this only caused an internal struggle to keep the food inside my body. Anxiety was taking up too much space in my stomach for me to gladly accept food.
- ... Why would the Vortex want a bunker? -I perceive Iker raising his head when listening to me- ... Why would they be willing to let my father go in exchange for something like that?
- And why wouldn't they want a bunker? -Iker replies without moving too much, because I was resting my back on his side at that moment- They would get supplies, food, medicine, and technology, as well as any weapon or armor that was stored there, plus the bunker itself would be an excellent refuge... Life out there is not easy. I can understand why they see that as a fair price for Marcus. -He speaks from his experience as an exile, having to fend for himself in the neutral lands-... But ten kilometers around as hunting territory... That's too much. That devil knows that the Leaders will give him anything in exchange for Marcus... Damn bastard.
Iker curses enough for both of us, which was appreciated, since I barely had enough strength to keep my eyes fixed on the doors of the Dome. I watched in the same way that, years ago, little me waited in the doorway of my house...waiting for my father to walk through that door one more time.
A familiar silhouette in the distance makes me finally blink and moisten my sore eyes. It was Zenda. She did not seem to have noticed our presence, because in addition to the fact that we were far from the entrance to the greenhouse, the little remaining light of the afternoon did her no favors in recognizing distant figures. But it wasn't like she was paying too much attention to her surroundings anyway, as she seemed more focused on heeding her son's call than lingering with unnecessary greetings.
I didn't notice how tense my body and expression had been until this moment when I gave myself the opportunity to stretch my legs, lean fully on the uneven surface of Iker's door, and turn to look at the cloudy afternoon sky above me. The stress has exhausted me, I feel my eyelids become heavy, and having full confidence that Iker was watching my back, I gave my brain permission to disconnect for a couple of minutes, minutes that my body would thank me for later.
...
- Ty... Hey, Tyler. -
His words pull me back to reality. I opened my eyes, but couldn't see anything besides a corridor of dim yellow lights. When clearing my sight, I realized that it was already nighttime, and these lights were nothing more than public lighting outside the dome... How long have I been asleep?
- Y-yes, I'm already awake... What's wrong? -I put a hand to my mouth to stifle my yawn, my cheek was soaked with my own saliva, and my throat hurt. I'm embarrassed to think that it's possible that I've been snoring like crazy all this time-
Iker gestures towards the gate, but I couldn't see anything beyond the overwhelming darkness that enveloped us. Soon a pair of hybrid eyes, blue as the heart of the sea, approach in on us. The darkness enveloped its bearer like a protective veil, it was as if she had materialized right in front of us without any warning.
- The Leaders ask you to enter the dome. Both of you. - Zenda emphasizes that we were both required. Her voice made Iker tremble from the inside, and she has altered my heart rate again.
It was time.
Zenda escorted Iker and me during the short walk, since the guards were no longer guarding the precious building. Inside the air felt stale and suffocating, living up to the main greenhouse function of this special place. The Leaders look exhausted; Edurne carefully rubs her forehead in order to relieve her headache, Leander stretches to relieve his back pain, typical of sitting on the floor for so long, Kassia keeps her eyes closed for a few moments, feeling relief by hydrating them again, and Darius looked more tired than usual, the lower corners of his eyes revealing deep eyebags, though those might not have been the product of a single day's hard work.
The three of us remain silent, expectant and respectful towards our Leaders who have surely had to move the sky, sea and earth to reach a conclusion. I search for answers in anticipation on Kassia's expressions, but she keeps her features stoic, impossible to read. Resigned to wait, I pin my hopes on Darius, who has decided to be the voice of the Council once again.
- After an arduous discussion, and having considered the risks and advantages that this mission represents, we have reached a consensus. -He mumbles the words into his mouth once more before saying them, tightening his bite as he gives himself the courage to speak again. -... We have decided to proceed with the exchange that Neyzan proposes. We'll rescue Marcus Hopper.
It is impossible for me not to react with an involuntary smile, strangling the cry of emotion that I forced to silence before it broke the atmosphere of seriousness that the moment deserves. Iker turns to see me open-mouthed, just as excited as I am. The only thing I allow myself to do is hug Iker on the highest part of his back, without disturbing the respectful silence too much, although that seemed to relax the Leaders a bit, stealing a very subtle smile from Kassia.
- I understand that this is good news for you, young Tyler, but I'm afraid I must put it in perspective, and detail the current situation so that you can fully understand it. -My smile doesn't last forever, not hearing the slight concern in Leader Darius's voice- This exchange is highly unpredictable, and there's no guarantee that everything will go perfectly, but we wouldn't be asking you to go on this mission if not because the evidence is strong, and that this opportunity may not be repeated.
- Sir... Excuse me, I think I misheard. Did you just say that...?
- You will go to the exchange along with the squad specially assigned for this mission, you will go to the neutral lands with them.
I swallow what little saliva I had, and I am left speechless listening to it. I never thought about the possibility that I would have to go out there and face my father's captors. My legs shake as I remember my only encounter with a Vortex. If Dheera was about to take my life... I couldn't imagine what the scenario would be like with the leader of the Vortex himself.
- Neyzan asks for a key to the bunker, one like this, specifically. -Edurne shows me a thick transparent plastic card, which inside seems to have metal engravings with a series of symbols that I didn't recognize- The only person in all of Cilt with the authority to create keys like this is the Scientific Leader; Your father. But not being here, the next in line of ranks with said authority to create keys, would be me... But there is a small, big problem... -Edurne types on her desk and opens the holographic wall in front of us again, showing Cilt's database. She then comes down from her desk with a chip reader, takes my left hand gently and runs the device over the skin of my wrist, thus opening the file that corresponds to me in the database... Although that was not my information , nor my profile... That was my father's profile- For some reason that none of us understand, you were mistakenly registered in the database with Marcus' profile, overwriting his information, giving you all the permissions he had... That makes you the only person in all of Cilt who can delegate these keys.
- ... And I imagine that Neyzan wants us to prove to him that the key is authentic... And the only way to do it is for me to go there. Right?
- That 's correct. In fact, I think you've already figured out that there's something weird about your chip compared to all the others. I have knowledge that you managed to open a room at the hospital that wasn't yours, just under a week ago. If it wasn't for that database error, you wouldn't have been able to do it.
The room where Iker was recovering the day Dheera attacked, which I snuck into without permission. Now it all makes sense, because when I opened that room the only thing the reader showed was my last name, not my first name. It seems that the "Hopper" on that occasion was not mine, but my father's.
- We understand that concern for your safety during the mission can be a valid impediment to agreeing to go, but I can assure you that we will do everything in our power to provide you with...
- I'm ready. -I affirm with determination, taking away from Edurne the burden of having to convince me to go on the mission, because I was ready, from the moment I heard his voice on the recording- I will do whatever you ask me to. If there's even a slim chance to bring him back, count me in. -Kassia smiles proudly, while her partner nods slightly upon hearing my disposition towards the mission-
- Then it's done. -Darius turns his weary gaze to his mother, who has been silent at our side all this time, waiting for the moment when she would be called upon. The male Hybrid Leader had to harden his face again, detecting that his mother's gaze had made him feel like a cub for a second- Zenda, prepare your best Warriors. You will leave in 42 hours. The mission will be under the responsibility of the Warriors, and Kassia will be the mission captain. Contact her for any clarification.
- Yes my Leader. -It took me by surprise that Darius called his mother by her name, and that she shows him unconditional obedience despite being her son. But knowing how much they both respect law and order here, it turns out to be the most logical reaction in the end. They more than anyone should put family feelings and ties aside when important decisions are made.
- Thanks Zenda. Before you leave... Could you call for Captain Adara? Tell her she is needed in the dome, please. -Kassia takes advantage of the warrior sub-leader's departure, before she turned around-
Zenda nods at her Leaders, retreating from the Council Dome as soon as she's ordered, just like a good soldier. Now we are left alone with Iker and myself in front of the big four. I felt confident, and their gaze no longer felt invasive, but Iker didn't seem to think the same, because as soon as Zenda left he seemed to revive his morning nervousness... And it seemed that now it was justified.
- Now, I think it's time we talk a little bit about Iker's performance, not only as Warrior, but as Tyler's guide. There have been a series of... misfortunes, which make me and Edurne think that the Warrior may not be suitable for his work, mainly for the boy's safety. -Normally Leander relegated himself to a listening position during Council sessions, but if this had been important enough for him to participate, he was an object of attention for the rest of the Leaders. Edurne remains silent in complicity with her human comrade, causing the hybrid couple to exchange glances for a few moments- Personally... I don't think Iker is emotionally and mentally stable enough to take care of Tyler.
- Iker has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome, as well as a marked emotional dependency on people close to him, which makes him prone to aggressiveness towards other hybrids and humans. -Edurne supports Leander's allegations, making Iker lower his head and bow in submission at the rough words of his Leaders- Our only concern is that these factors might prevent him from doing his job, and this can result in another accident in the future.
- I share your concern for his safety, Edurne, but I disagree with your reasons for considering Iker unfit for the job. If there's one hybrid in all of Cilt capable of guiding Tyler, it's him. -Kassia's words give me goosebumps. She maintains her position when debating with the human Leader, showing her clear disagreement with what she said- Iker has sworn to protect Tyler with his life when he was given his guide position, and such a job cannot be requested to anyone, It would be irresponsible of me. But since Iker has a conditional citizenship, he is forced to carry out the most dangerous missions, including those that endanger his life.
- That is not what is being discussed here, Kassia. My point is, no matter how willing Iker is to protect Tyler at all costs, if he is unable to control his impulses he will be just as unable to react to a life or death situation, which has already happened once, And I can't let it happen a second time.
- ... With all due respect, my Leader. Did you see Iker the day of the attack? ... Are you sure that's what happened? -I swallowed nervously when everyone looked at me, including Iker, who seemed surprised at my audacity (or stupidity) to interrupt the dialogue of the Leaders. But there is no turning back. I promised Iker that I would defend him when the time came for his trial, and this was that moment- There were no real witnesses that day other than Iker and myself, and I think it would be unfair to rely on the amnesia that both I and my friend suffered from the accident... The only one who could partially witness what happened was Leader Darius, and he hasn't even had a chance to participate in this debate. In my opinion... I think he is the only one with enough evidence to make a judgment.
My words seem to have woken him up at last. Darius has stayed on the sidelines while everyone else discussed Iker's case, even though he was the only one who witnessed with his own eyes what really happened, as if he didn't want to be involved in any way with this trial. The Leader has perfected the art of keeping his poker face, but his tired eyes don't lie as he gazes at Iker, who only maintains eye contact out of sheer fear; Iker's fate was once again in his word and that hurt him. He couldn't keep his eyes on the Hunter he exiled years ago. Darius sighs to himself, no longer even hiding the fact that he preferred to return home as soon as possible, snuggle up in bed with his beloved, and start mentally preparing for the days to come, so it was no surprise that he decided to end the argument on both sides.
- It is clear that Iker is no longer required for his guide duty; Mr. Hopper has enough information about Cilt to fend for himself, and judging by Ciro's report, he no longer requires anyone's help. So yes, I agree that Iker's period as Tyler's hybrid guide has come to an end. -Iker gapes at the coldness of Darius' words, which cause a hollow pain in my chest, just as Kassia looks at him in disbelief, unable to believe what he had just said... Although something in his gesture told me , he wasn't over yet- ... But I'm afraid the landscape has changed rapidly since young Tyler came to Cilt. Vortex sightings have increased, and now more than ever, high-priority people like him need greater protection in any situation. That is why I propose that Iker be assigned as his personal bodyguard, with the sole purpose of keeping him safe.
The Hybrid Leader would be free to brag about his ability to create tension, but he could never lie to admit that sometimes he just does it for his own entertainment. Kassia rolls her eyes, renewing the respectful smile on her face, while Edurne and Leander have no choice but to accept Darius's proposal, making him understand that this was his decision, and the consequences that derive from it, would be at his own expense. As far as Iker and I are concerned, we couldn't ask for anything better, and we both decided to keep quiet so as not to alter the final decision of the Leaders.
It doesn't take long for Adara to join us in the dome. It was a pleasant surprise to see her in casual clothes and without her armor. She seemed as intrigued and nervous by her spontaneous call as Iker and I had earlier in the day, so I simply smiled to let her know that she wasn't here for bad news, and that everything was fine. That gave me a free pass to greet her by bumping fists like good friends... something that Iker didn't seem to fully appreciate, snorting discreetly, limiting himself to keeping his eyes on the Leaders and not on Adara.
- Good evening, Captain Adara. I'm sorry that you had to come here at this hour, but we require your support right now.
- You don't have to apologize, my General. I am ready to serve at any time. -Adara responds with admiration and respect towards Kassia, maintaining a slight bow when speaking- Tell me, how can I help you?
- We are in possession of invaluable information from a reliable source, which has led us to the decision to embark on a mission to neutral lands, all in order to rescue Marcus Hopper and bring him back to Cilt. We want you and Saemus to join us in this mission as support. Since you two have Warrior training, your help might be required during the mission.
Adara is speechless, processing for a moment everything Kassia had just said to her. She wouldn't have told her that way if she hadn't trusted Adara to handle it just fine.
- It is... a great honor for me and Saemus that we have been considered for this mission. We gladly offer our knowledge and skill at your service, my Leader.
- Your determination and disposition are appreciated, Captain... Since I have a favor to ask you before the day of the mission arrives. -Adara looks expectantly at her General, ready to follow any order given to her. She really seemed proud to have been required in such an important assignment, and was willing to do whatever it took to fulfill the expectations that everyone had of her- Surely you are already familiar with Tyler and Iker. They will also go to this mission, so I need you to provide them with intensive Ranger training focused on teamwork. They will need to be able to blend in as a couple of Hunters during the mission, and you are our best option for training them.
Adara freezes her expression, turns to see Iker and me from head to toe, several times, enough to cause a subtle expression that I could only describe as concern. She takes in a deep breath to assuage her doubts, but something prevents her from accepting Kassia's orders as they are given to her.
- ... With all due respect, my General... My squad has highly trained hybrid Hunters who could make excellent companions for Tyler... Not to mention that they have already completed their Ranger training and are active Hunters. That could save us time and it would only be necessary to train Tyler, instead of having to train two individuals at the same time. -Clearly, Adara was not willing to train Iker, which did not surprise me at all. Respecting Iker from afar was one thing, but working alongside him seemed to be something completely different for her, and apparently it was out of her tolerance limits towards my yellow friend-
- With all due respect, Captain, I choose the elements of my squad, and I have decided that the two of them should go on this mission together. That is why I require your support to train them, and ensure that they will be able to work as a team out there. -Kassia highlights her hierarchy by emphasizing Adara's title, just as any General would when detecting any hint of insubordination-
- But Iker has lost practice as a Ranger since he is no longer a Hunter. Please, I ask you to reconsider.
- Your General has given you an order. Are you willing to follow indications? Or are we forced to find someone who can follow orders? Captain Adara. -Darius was not pleased seeing his queen's words questioned, so he had to intervene in the exchange of arguments, effectively ending the discussion with Adara closing her mouth and accepting the will of the Leaders-
- ... My apologies, my General... We will start the training first hour in the morning as you ordered. -Adara brings her fist to her chest, deeply apologizing for having disrespected her Leaders-
- So be it. -With nothing more to add, Kassia turns to Darius, who seems as pleased with the current situation as a man who is aware that his mate is about to embark on a dangerous mission outside the city's barriers. To say that he had high expectations would be cheeky, but right now, he seemed at ease with the pace at which things were taking place-
- Then we can end this long session. Let's go to rest, there are many things to do tomorrow. We can go home.
Adara wasted no time getting out of the dome, embarrassment still present on her body expression, hiding her face at all costs. She didn't even give me a chance to say goodbye to her.
I sigh to myself, empathizing with how bad Adara must be feeling right now, until a gentle push on my legs brings me back to reality. Iker smiles confidently as if nothing had happened, opening his right door with an inviting gesture.
- Wanna go?
---------------------------------------------------------
3:00 a.m. That's what my father's old pocket watch reads when I'm not fiddling with it.
I wanted to bring an item of his with me, finally accepting the fact that I might not be able to fall asleep no matter how hard I tried. How could I? Knowing that he was out there.
The mines are a strangely peaceful place once one gets used to the silence and perpetual darkness, and the claustrophobia has worn off the psyche.
I was able to sense the exact moment when Iker decided to investigate why the door to our room was open, and what I was doing leaning out of the hallway balcony. Gently, he leaves the room to lie next to me without saying a single word. Just him and me, trying to steal some peace and comfort from the darkness that surrounds us.
- So, you can't sleep either, huh? -A simple murmur escapes my throat, silently nodding to his question. Tension building between the two again because of the silence- ... Nervous?
- You have no idea, Iker... I'm terrified. -My hands have not stopped shaking since we left the dome, unable to recognize if it was emotion, or fear what caused it. I couldn't just feign naive joy at the prospect of seeing my father again. Something inside me forces me to prepare myself for the worst case scenario, and that has kept me up at night-... No matter what happens when we're out there, nothing will ever be the same... and that terrifies me.
Iker takes a moment to let me reflect on what I had just said. The fear of change may be something Iker is used to, especially after having to go through so many changes in his life himself over the years, but for me, having barely managed to make any major changes in my life before arriving here, I am paralyzed by the fear of even thinking about what I will find there.
Calm before the storm. That's how it felt.
Not having been able to recognize my father's voice has made me feel guilty. Have I perhaps forgotten it so easily? After all, I was just a child when fate separated us, and it would be cruel to blame the little boy who was stripped of his father so abruptly, get over his father's supposed death, and continue with his life. It wasn't fair to blame me for something like that, people change over time.
My heart is conflicted as to what causes its pain and concern; The possibility of everything going wrong and never being able to meet my father again... Or everything going well, and having to meet my father again from scratch, with the possibility that neither of us lives up to our expectations that our prolonged absence has caused. It's kind of awkward to even think about it.
- Well... Whatever happens there, we will be together. You won't have to go through this alone.
His words bring me some comfort, reminding me that I wasn't alone in my thoughts, and clearly, I wasn't the only one who felt this way. Iker has also had to suffer without him, and it would be selfish to exclude him from the equation. We are a team, and we will continue to be regardless of the end.
