Hursey’s media center is open during school hours from 7:00am - 2:00pm Monday through Fridays. If after or before school appointments are requested, please email the media specialist. The media center is closed for all district scheduled holidays, breaks, work days, or school closing days. The library operates on a fixed schedule, therefore, most students will be visiting the library weekly and can also visit with their teacher's permission during dedicated open hours. 

Primary teachers determine if they would like for their students to keep library books in their classrooms or take them home. Primary parents should reach out to their classroom teacher to determine if their child (ren) will be bringing library books home on a regular basis. 

All students are allowed to check out one book at a time. The number of book checkouts can also be reviewed on a student by student basis. Check out duration is two weeks for all items, and students can renew the same item, as long as it is not on a waitlist. Lower Elementary students can have a maximum of 3 books on their account. Upper Elementary and Adolescent students can have a maximum of 5 books checked out on their account at a time. 

Only adolescent students are able to check out young adult materials, which are located in its own library section and have a YA sticker on the spine of the books. If any other student wants to check out YA materials, the media specialist must receive a written or emailed permission letter from a parent or guardian. You can also visit fill out the YA Permission Form to quickly send permission for your child. Please know that if parents/guardians do not supply an email address, your child will not be given access through this form. An email address is required, unless you would like to send an email directly from your account or send in a signed note. 

Students are expected to implement proper book care and handling when using the library and all library materials. There are never any late fees for overdue books. If a book is lost or damaged, students are required to pay for the replacement cost of the book by either bringing in cash or using the Hursey Revtrak website. Visit the Hursey Revtrak site.

Students are encouraged to visit the library frequently, as it is a place for collaboration and exploration. Upon entering and using the library, it is expected that students respect the library, the teacher librarian, other students, and all library materials. Students are also expected to adhere to all school and library rules and listen to the teacher librarian at all times. Students who do not adhere to proper behavior in the library will lose library time and privileges. 

Students will be able to utilize the makerspace during special area visits to the library. The privilege to use the makerspace must be earned after engaging in a library lesson with the rest of the class. Students not following library expectations can lose makerspace privileges. Activities will rotate on a weekly basis. 

Students must be responsible when using makerspace items, handle these items with care, clean up items when finished using them, and return all makerspace materials to original box and location. 

Teachers can request usage of makerspace materials in their classrooms by emailing the media specialist.
