In the Social Media Impact project, we were assigned to take a quick quiz about the frequency with which we use social media to determine our own personal information based on how addicted we are to our phones and what is going on in the world through various social media applications. Afterwards, we were to do some research on an article full of different types of statistics of social media usage in America through the Pew Research Center and choose one of the statistics listed that personally stood out to us.
When I participated in the social media survey to determine how addicted I am to my social life, I answered each question completely honestly to get the most accurate results. After taking the brief survey, my results indicated that I am fairly reliant on social media; however, there are "far worse culprits," meaning that although I am reliant on my phone, especially on social media apps, I could have received worse results. To be honest, I wasn't very surprised by my results since I have grown away from my phone and become more social in the outside world, away from my phone, and try to stay off my phone as much as I can, although I do catch myself lying in bed scrolling the latest social media feeds.
While strolling through the article written by the PEW Research Center, towards the bottom of the page, I saw a chart that represented the frequency of social media use regarding how often adults use social media apps and which apps they tend to use throughout their day. This statistic stood out to me and caught my attention due to the fact that Facebook was the leading application that is most frequently used by adults in the US over TikTok and YouTube. This caught my attention because in the day and age that we are in, we see lots of influencers, teenagers, and adults using TikTok to connect with others, and how much it has skyrocketed in usage worldwide, despite Facebook being used more by around 28% than TikTok and 4% than YouTube. I have added the statistical chart just to the right so you can give it a look for yourself.
I believe that social media has its pros and its cons regarding the impact that it has on our society and the people in the world for a few reasons. To start, I believe that social media definitely has its negative additions to society by the idea of the younger generation growing up with their face stuck in a screen with no regard for the real world and what is around them. For instance, I am sure many of us can remember the days of summer as younger boys and girls waking up and begging to go outside and play with friends, not even realizing that we are being exposed to so many things that have positively shaped us, but, nowadays kids are asking for more time on their gaming consoles or tablets that are realistically sheltering them from the outside, the real world. However, social media has its pros in our society, like catching us up on the latest news and what is going on in our favorite athletes, actors, or any influencers' lives that we may have missed out on, and real-world news that everyone should already be looking at, but maybe we missed something. Therefore, I believe that social media has its pros and its cons regarding the impact that it has on our society.
While completing this project, I was able to learn some things about social media and myself, like how much people like me use their phones and are nose deep in social media apps to catch up on things in the world and not knowing when to stop scrolling and just simply put it down. I also learned that adults are simply being shaped by the usage of social media while reading stats from PEW Research Center and the amount of grown-ups using the same applications kids do daily for the majority of their day.
