Stachytarpheta jamaicensis

This was a new addition to our garden in 2005. This is a very interesting plant that reaches 4 feet in height. Stachytarpheta has flower spikes that unfurl small flowers beginning at the bottom and then progresses gradually up the flower spike. It does not have the classic appearance of a hummingbird flower (i.e. it is not long and tubular). But, the hummingbirds like this flower, similiar to their use of butterfly bush. This is a fun annual for us and we will have this in our hummingbird garden every year in the future. We previously purchased our plant from Singing Springs Nursery, but they have now gone out of business.

The flowers come in a variety of colors including purple, red, and coral colored. Here is a hummingbird enjoying the coral colored flowers in our front yard in 2010.
