This was a new addition to our garden in 2005. This is a very interesting plant that reaches 4 feet in height. Stachytarpheta has flower spikes that unfurl small flowers beginning at the bottom and then progresses gradually up the flower spike. It does not have the classic appearance of a hummingbird flower (i.e. it is not long and tubular). But, the hummingbirds like this flower, similiar to their use of butterfly bush. This is a fun annual for us and we will have this in our hummingbird garden every year in the future. We previously purchased our plant from Singing Springs Nursery, but they have now gone out of business.

There are various varieties including jamaicensis, mutabilis, cayennensis, microphylla, frantzii and specific named cultivars. More recently, we have obtained various varieties of Stachytarpheta from Almost Eden Plants, but they are also going out of business in 2026. We will be attempting to take cuttings from our Stachytarpheta plants and when we obtain pictures of hummingbirds at these flowers, new web pages will be added.
