Silphium perfoliatum (cup plant)

Here is a reliable perennial that has multiple uses for hummingbirds. This plant is very tall at over 7 to 8 feet. It has yellow flowers that are smaller versions of sun flowers, and we believe that the hummers go to these flowers for the insects that they attract and possibly nectar. Lastly, the leaves of this plant adjacent to the stem hold rain water (thus, the name cup plant) and hummers can bathe in this water.
