We have grown this in a pot each year since 2017. In one season, the plant becomes 5 to 6 feet tall. It has been blown over by the wind due to being so top heavy, but it is easy enough to prevent that by weighting down the pot with bricks. It is an excellent late summer salvia for hummingbirds. The only source for this plant was Flowers by The Sea. We are unaware that anyone currently carries the plants or seeds for Salvia rubescens subsp. dolichothrix.Â
With the closure of Flowers by The Sea in 2023, we successfully propogated this plant fom a cutting and kept that plant alive over the 2023-2024 winter. We also harvested seeds and successfully grew the plant from seed (by starting the seeds indoors under grow lights in late February-early March.) The seed grown plants started blooming in August and the migrating ruby throated hummingbirds used this plant extensively.
