Manettia cordifolia

The common name for this is Firecracker Vine. It is an annual for us, but we have it in a pot and keep this inside during the winter time. The vine above the soil will die during the winter inside, but the roots are still alive and a new vine will emerge from the surface of the soil in the spring/summer. Interestingly, we have found that the potted plant likes to be in the shade. The vine will grow up toward the sun and flowers profusely at the end of the season, which as always, is the best time to have many flowers due to the increased number of birds migrating through our yard. The picture above shows the vine on an arbor in our backyard (note the white curving plastic arbor in the lower right hand corner). The potted plant is in a hanging basket in the middle of this arbor.
