This cultivar was discovered in the Louisiana garden of master hummingbird bander Nancy Newfield. The plant is significantly taller than the straight species of Salvia coccinea. The plant was commercially sold by Flowers by the Sea, but that nursery is out of business. Thus, this plant is now shared amongst hummingbird gardening enthusiasts via cuttings or seeds.
We are so very grateful to Nan for discovering this cultivar of Salvia coccinea. We are even more grateful to Nan for writing the book, 'Hummingbird Gardens: Attracting Nature's Jewels to Your Backyard' which was our inspiration to become obsessed with gardening for hummingbirds in our Wisconsin yard.
