Canna indica

A co-worker gave Michael some canna bulbs. Little did we know that this would be one of the premier hummingbird flowers in our garden. This is the native single flower variety of canna. Our reading of the literature is that hummers will not go to the fancier, larger flowered canna hybrids. We grow the canna that is pictured and Canna 'Robert Kemp' and the hummers love these flowers. There must be a large volume of nectar in the flowers because we see hummers spend quite a bit of time (up to 10 seconds) at each flower. After the first frost, we dig up the bulbs, cut off the stalks, and store the bulbs in our basement. The bulbs multiply profusely; we have given away many canna bulbs.
