Buddleia davidii

We were thinking more of attracting butterflies (rather than hummingbirds) when we first planted Butterfly bush. Interestingly, the hummers use Buddleia to a moderate amount. It is fascinating to see how rapidly they insert their bills from one flower to the next. The hummers must spend mere nanoseconds at each flower. Buddleia has been a reliable perennial for us (except for one that died at a very cold northwestern corner of our yard). We leave the stalks in place over the winter and prune down to close to ground level in the spring before new growth emerges.
