Aesculus pavia (Dwarf Red Buckeye)
Dwarf red buckeye is a long term project in our upper midwest garden. It takes at least 5 years for the plant to become mature enough to flower. This is the earliest flowering hummingbird plant in our garden, typically flowering in late April to May. We often do not have many hummingbirds in our garden when dwarf red buckeye flowers, but we were fortunate enough to capture the above image on May 17, 2022.
