2005 Milwaukee Selasphorus
On October 8, 2005, we travelled from Madison to Milwaukee to observe this Selasphorus hummingbird that has been present for 3 weeks. The homeowners, Eric and Lauren, said that the hummingbird was much more active when ruby throated hummingbirds were still present. Now that the ruby throats are gone, this selasphorus defends a tree in the backyard against other birds (chickadees, goldfinches, etc.)

We assume that this is an immature rufous hummingbird.

Note the drop of nectar on the bird's bill.

A big thank you goes to our gracious hosts, Lauren and Eric, who allowed us to spend 45 minutes to one hour in their yard.
