After reading James Brown's memoir and interviewing his personal driver, the movie "Get On Up" did a really good job of portraying his life. As I was watching the movie and seeing his reactions to events (and the way the talked to and treated his band mates, children and fans), I was thinking to myself, "This is all true, this is everything that Mr. Bobby Azar (Brown's personal driver) was telling us in our interview and everything I read." Not many movies today accurately portray celebrities lives well, but this film did an amazing job at showing us who James Brown was. -Shalisha Whitaker
I feel like after watching the movie, I got a much better understanding of who James Brown really was on a visual aspect-- apart from just the research and facts. The movie did a great job portraying Brown's life. From his childhood, all the way up to him becoming the legend he is today. I also feel like the actor playing James Brown, Chadwick Boseman, was a perfect fit for the role. From the style to the hair, I felt like I was actually watching James Brown himself. I also think that the film did a really good job on depicting Brown on a more personal level. You were truly able to see his emotions and understand what led to some of his actions. There were some things I found out watching the movie that I honestly did not know about such as some of the songs which I could recognize but had no idea they were by James Brown! Overall, I would say that the film was definitely a great way to seek another outlook on the life of James Brown. -Osi Utsalo
