Part 2: On Socialism and Other Alternatives to Capitalism

In January of this year, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists abandoned minutes and moved the Doomsday clock to seconds -- 100 seconds to midnight -- the humanity has ever been to cataclysm. Time is running out to fix the problems in our society. What are the rising dangers, and how have Capitalism and the Nation State driven us to the brink? How can the traditions of Socialism, from left-Marxism to anarchism, help us address these global threats? Presented by Jon Tijerina.

On Socialism, and other alternatives to Capitalism

Presented by Jonathan Tijerina

The 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign re-awoke a discussion about something which had, for many years, been a kind of taboo in America: Socialism. Like his contemporaries in the UK (Jeremy Corbyn), in Bolivia (Evo Morales), and Greece (the Syriza Party), Sanders' historic campaign showed that socialism and its ideas are having a modern rebirth. Socialism, in large part based on the works of Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels among many others, has spread to every country on the planet. It has been both praised and vilified throughout the world. But what is socialism? Is it a viable alternative to Capitalism? What do some of the Left traditions of thought have in common, and how can their insights help us confront some of the greatest threats humanity has ever faced?
