Humanism Explorations Announcements for

Sunday November 17, 2019 3 to 5 P.M. What Is Christian Nationalism?

"The threat of Christian nationalism is not new. But this movement, which promotes the idea that to be a real American you must be Christian, is growing with a dangerous intensity. It’s not only behind the push for bills that advance a revisionist historical view of the United States and promote government-sponsored religious exercise; it also has inspired religious hate crimes, arson and deadly attacks on houses of worship. The same thing is happening abroad." -- Christians Against Christian Nationalism

We will discuss the Christian Nationalism movement and the recent best selling book The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism is Un-American by Andrew L Seidel

Sunday Dec 1, 2019 3 to 5 P.M. The Prosperity Gospel

A follow up to our discussion of Christian Nationalism will explore the "Prosperity Gospel". This month Prosperity Gospel megachurch televangelist Paula White was appointed by Trump as special adviser to the federal Faith and Opportunity Initiative. She is credited with converting Pres. Trump to Christianity.

Prosperity Theology teaches that God rewards faith—and generous tithing—with financial blessings and full happiness. It has been criticized by mainstream evangelicalism as heresy and by others for exploiting followers with "magical thinking" and unrealistic promises.

Its roots lie in the 19th century New Thought movement as do other denominations such as Unity and Christian Science. It has been influenced by the Calvinism Protestant work ethic and is related to the Pentecostal and the Charismatic Christianity movements.
