Description:
An 8-12 week internship program in clinical research related to developmental and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents is offered by Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York – the flagship children’s hospital of the Northwell Health System. The Summer Research Internship offers 3 - 5 accomplished students the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor on one or more research projects related to normal or abnormal child development. Students will assist the faculty member in an ongoing research project and/or work collaboratively with the mentor in designing a new project of mutual interest. Although the internship is primarily focused on clinical research, there may be an opportunity for one or more summer interns to co-author a review article for publication in a peer-reviewed pediatric journal. While participating in the program, interns will be expected to attend some introductory clinical lectures about child development and developmental disorders. Research interns will also be encouraged to attend other lectures of interest available through the Department of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital. There will also be opportunities for occasional shadowing of clinicians in our sub-specialty area and potentially other pediatric sub-specialties as well.
It is anticipated that students will be included as coinvestigators on one or more research abstracts submitted to national research meetings. Students who are able to successfully write a manuscript for journal submission of their research findings will be identified as the first or second author of any paper submitted for publication. There may be an opportunity for a well-qualified student to collaborate on a review article for a peer-reviewed medical journal. To the extent that the specific focus of this review article has not yet been determined, suggestions by intern applicants are welcome. The article needs to be clinically focused and related to a specific developmental disorder or concern. A student with strong academic credentials and equally strong writing skills may be given the opportunity to write the first draft of this article and thus be identified as first author of this review article. The manuscript will need to be completed by August 20th .

The MSK Engage program aims to provide New York City undergraduate students including those from groups historically underrepresented in biomedical fields with two years of research experience in MSK labs to help them become competitive candidates for graduate school or professional positions as lab technicians.
Engage Scholars would join MSK labs during the summer between their junior and senior years for a bootcamp in lab basics, followed by a nine- to ten–week immersion in research. Scholars would join a series of lectures and professional development activities alongside participants in other MSK summer internships for college students. They will receive a stipend of $6,500 for the 10-week internship.
During the following academic (senior) year, Engage Scholars would continue working in the same MSK lab part-time for up to 12 hours per week as their course schedule allows. They will receive up to $7,500 for this period of the engagement.
Upon completing their undergraduate degree, Engage Scholars who meet the eligibility criteria will transition into a full gap year in the same lab and will join the MSK’s Bridge Postbac Program.
Eligibility:
Are strongly committed to apply to a PhD in biomedical fields.
Are US citizens or legal permanent residents. (We welcome applicants with DACA status but note that many DACA holders have experienced significant wait times to renew their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and we would need to work together with a long lead time.)
