The 2020 Track Season

Dear Track Team,

Track practice will start Tuesday, April 7th. Practices are 5:00-5:45, at Lavelli Field, which is the track by Evamere. The Middle School Track meets have been previewed and there should be no conflict with other sports due to the fact that most games are played at the new Memorial Stadium or Molsen Field.

There will be no practices on days when it is raining, snowing, or extremely cold. If you are at the field and are not sure whether there is practice, please wait until a coach arrives and a decision is made. If I know early in the day that there will be no practice, I will send out an email. Always check your email before leaving the house. Please dress your athlete for the weather, layers are best. Please wear hats and gloves. It can be very cold. Tennis shoes are a must. No sandals or flip-flops should be worn. A water bottle is also a good idea. Please write the athlete’s name on the bottle.

The purpose of Special Olympics is to train athletes to go to competitions. We urge you to prepare and encourage your athlete to compete in the Invitational, Regional and State meets. The State Qualifier is Saturday,May 9 at Kent Roosevelt High School. An athlete must attend this meet to be able to compete in Columbus. Other meets are in North Canton at Hoover High School on May 16 and Medina on June 6th.

Conditioning is an important part of track. We always start with warm-ups and stretches. You can condition your athlete at home by taking walks a few times a week and increasing the distance every week. Make sure you stretch their muscles before the walk. If you need some exercises, one of the coaches will be glad to help you. Throwing a ball into a laundry basket or another target is a great way to get ready for the softball throw. When throwing the softball, use the verbal cue “Step and Throw.” If you think your athlete is better at throwing underhand please let the coach know at the beginning of the season. This will allow for consistency in practice.

Running up the driveway is a great distance for a sprint. Running is a difficult event and the biggest problem is not speed but the endurance and stamina for the runner. If your athlete is a long-distance runner, running around your neighborhood will help increase their stamina.

If you know anyone who would like to volunteer, please have them email me. I may have to ask some parents of athletes to stay during the practices or find a person to help an athlete if volunteers are in short supply. Remember, children or middle school students or non-volunteer parents are not permitted inside the track area. Please wait behind the turnstile

Please send an email to me ASAP to let me know what type of events your athlete would like to compete in. All athletes can compete in two events and a relay. If considering a relay, it is important to know that the athlete must be in Columbus at 2:30 on Friday afternoon.

I look forward to a great season.

Please note… An athlete can not practice or compete unless current medical forms are filed with Special Olympics. The needed forms can be found on the Hudson Special Olympic website at www.hudsonspecialolympics.org

This is the 20th Anniversary for Hudson Special Olympics. I think as many athletes as possible should march in the Memorial Day Parade. Special 20th anniversary T shirts are being designed for all athletes and parents to wear. Please let me know if you are interested in participating in the parade. We can try to make accommodations for those who have difficulty walking.
