About
Background
Hudson Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual
disabilities who reside within the boundaries of the Hudson School district. We are an accredited affiliate of
Special Olympics Ohio and follow the rules and guidelines established by the International Special Olympics
organization.
Our Chapter began in 2000 with six athletes in track and field led by Josanne Hyclak, who still continues in her role
as Head Coach. Soon after, the the swim program began and grew from there because of the dedication of many
wonderful volunteers and because of the support of the community of Hudson.
We currently serve over 75 athletes in six different sports. We encourage a commitment to life long fitness as well
as engaging in sports for competition, fun and social activity.
Financial Support
There is no charge to the athletes to participate in Special Olympics. Since its inception in 1968, Special Olympics
has maintained this policy as a means of assuring the program's accessibility. Our Hudson organization is a
self-supporting, non-profit organization.
Our costs are entirely underwritten by donations and contributions from the community. We receive no tax monies!
The cost per athlete ranges from $200 to $500 per year for year-round participation. Costs include uniforms, sports
equipment, fees and other expenses including participation of qualified athletes in regional and state competitions.
Our athletes are proud to belong to a team from their very own community. We are
grateful for the tremendous support this community has given to Hudson Special Olympics.
It should be noted that because we are an all-volunteer organization, by default, some of the
financial burden incurred does fall to the family/caregivers of the athletes. Parents and caregivers
are responsible for travel to and from practices and competitions. Because of this, we have set up
funds to help defer the costs for those if needed (see reimbursement guidelines on the join us
page). Some people choose not to ask for these reimbursements and consider it a "donation"
(please talk with your tax advisor if you are eligible for this). But the monies are there if it is
needed so any reimbursement made will always be kept in the strictest confidence. We trust our
families and friends to use them judiciously.
Our Athletes
Athletes join Hudson Special Olympics for many reasons - the competition, for fitness, for fun and for the social
activity. Special Olympics requires athletes to be at least 8 years old to participate. We have about 40 bowlers,
40 in track and field, 15 in bocce, 30 in golf, 25 in team bowling and 25 who swim!
