Pictured to the left is a research poster that I completed during my time at UNC Charlotte. This was a data collection assignment about the impact of different communication types and frequencies and their impact on student stress levels. I conducted several surveys and interviewed different students from across campus to determine what the correlations were between constant communications and their stress levels. This was during my freshman year and allowed me to start becoming more comfortable reaching out to people I dont know as well as grow in my confidence in my work and communication skills.
During my junior year as an HSMT major, I was given the opportunity to do an interview with a currnt HR manager to discuss the healthcare field and the benefits and challenges of working such a demanding job. This was a great opportunity to connect with a professional in a field that I hope to someday work in. The interview went very well and we were given some great insigt to what day-to-day life looks like in healthcare. Not only was this a great networking opportunity, but it opened my eyes to a more realistic view of the healthcare field. This was an assignment that I truly enjoied and I reccomend if you have the chance to connect with professionals in your area of study, that you jump at the opportunity.
"Hello, My name is Samantha Cisney, I am a senior at UNC Charlotte majoring in Health Systems Management with a minor in Health and Medical Humanities. My main goal is to work within HR in the healthcare system to improve employee experiences in the medical field. After Graduating, I am going to stay at Charlotte to complete my graduate education and get a masters degree in healthcare administration. I am passionate about working closely with people to make improvements across the board and I am excited to have the opportunity to connect with a company such as yours which provides that opportunity and has aligned goals. I would love to find ways to stay connected and learn about what opportunities you might have available."
An elevator Pitch is a critical part of networking and career development. Some of the most important people that you meet could be in short bursts or in passing. I personally feel like I didn't finalize my elevator pitch until this year. I finally was able to tweak it to reflect me as a student and a potention employee and have enjoyed being able to network with it this year.
As a part of Alpha Omega Epsilon, a professional sorority for women in STEM, I get the opportunity to plan several events each year in partnership with other campus organizations. I was able to plan an event last semester with Active Minds, a mental health and well-being organization on campus. Each of these events requires several weeks of communication and planning between the leaders of our two organizations, but it worth it to strengthen campus bonds.
