Overall, I have gained so much insight into not only the healthcare field and all its aspects, but myself personally. I have been able to attribute my professional and leadership success to some of the components of my classes, which is typically rare this early into the course of study. I believe that learning the different leadership types and styles as well as the components of organizational structures allow for a full comprehensive understanding of the career and how to manage it in a way that will benefit those who work for you while also benefiting yourself. Knowing the ins and outs of an organization, the people in it, and why it runs the way it does will also allow for easier solutions to issues that will inevitably arise during your time working for the organization. In terms of leadership and ethics, I believe that knowing how to act ethically will also result in a smooth leadership experience. Acting in a way that aligns with the ethical values of an organization will make you and the organization itself more successful. All of this along with the 5 competencies build a well rounded professional. The most difficult part of creating this portfolio was trying to separate the artifacts into their respective sections. I find that everything fits into multiple categories. For example, professionalism is not possible without communication just as leadership is not possible without the knowledge of the healthcare system. It is imperative to know your strengths and weaknesses as well as how they play into each other. This will allow you to be able to be well rounded and grow as a professional. I am lucky to have experience in a lot of these areas. Despite this, I also know that I have a long way to go before I am qualified to be a leader in a healthcare setting.Â
