New York City is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is no surprise that many all around the world come and visit the City that Never Sleeps. Beyond the lights of Time Square, there are many strange secrets and details within the avenues. This list conjures some of the most peculiar facts that to even New Yorkers, sound like a lie.
(Note all of these facts are actually true)
New York City's tap water is one of the healthiest in the world, however many ask how they keep this water so pure. The answer is not so smooth.
New York City uses copepods, a microscopic crustacean, to filter the tap water. At first this seems disgusting but there is a beneficial reason. The city implements this because the copepods feed on the arguably worse and more irritating mosquito larvae.
Central Park is a massive park, the sixth largest in the city and by far the largest in Manhattan.
Known for its history of being a popular filming location and having beautiful scenic views. Few know that the park itself is larger than two countries. The 840 acre park is larger than Monaco and Vatican City, with the latter being only ⅛th of Central park’s size.
Albert Einstein is renowned for being the world’s greatest scientist ever at the turn of the 20th of century. Even after his passing he would definitely continue to fascinate some folks. After an illegal autopsy by a hospital physicist, pieces of his brain would bounce across the world.
His eyeballs would rather go in the hands of Einstein's own eye doctor before vanishing without a trace.
It is unknown where his eyes went but many have opted to believe that they are in a safe box somewhere in the City. Just watching….
When it comes to cities with nice beaches, New York City doesn't really come to mind at first. With all those pollutants and rats running within the rivers and bay, taking a swim is not in the list of things to do here. However, New York City holds many tidal bays, beaches and massive saltmarsh bays. All of these regions make the city hold 520 miles of coastline. This in turn makes it's seaside larger than Miami, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco COMBINED.
Unsurprisingly New York City needs to make sure there is law and order within all the boroughs. Most laws do have some sense, no wild animals, no car honking and no to having a puppet show at your window? Doesn't that sound stringed? On section 10-114 of the City's apprehensive code it mentions that you are not allowed to dance or play with puppets in front of a window. Believe it or not you can get fined or arrested for this seemingly nonsensical activity.
Being one of the most famous cities in the world, New York City brings millions of people and cultures together . This is why the Big Apple is nicknamed the ‘Salad Bowl’ or ‘Melting Pot.’ Not as well known is how the city was at the forefront of culinary arts. The recipe for modern spaghetti and meatballs, eggs Benedict and the pastrami sandwich were all created in the Lower East Side. Also Lobardi's Pizza is in fact America's oldest pizzeria
It is sadly a recurring theme in American cities that not everywhere is safe. There always must be a part of our brains that need to activate our instincts when something goes awry. Mysteriously on one November 28th 2012, there was not a single instance of violent crime reported for 24 hours and 50 minutes. It is unknown what had occurred however that year in general had a lower than average annual crime average. I suppose we sure could use more once-a century holidays from crime.
