Hwayeon Ryu

I am an Associate Professor in the mathematics and statistics department at Elon University in North Carolina. 

My research interests are focused on mathematical modeling and analysis of dynamical systems arising from other disciplines, like systems biology, neuroscience, immunology, epidemiology, or sociology. My work is currently supported by the National Science Foundation research grants, DMS-2151990 and DMS-2602053. I also have a great passion for the development of a bridge curriculum and program between mathematics and biology.

Recent News on Ryu's Research Group:

August, 2026: Dr. Ryu received Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from Mathematical Association of America, one of the organization’s highest honors recognizing excellence in undergraduate mathematics education.

July, 2026: Dr. Ryu's group received a new NSF grant on "RUI: Mathematical modeling of innate antiviral and inflammatory responses for viral myocarditis" (for 2026-2029) in collaboration with Dr. Efrain Rivera-Serrano in Biology at Elon.

2025-2026: Dr. Ryu takes a year-long sabbatical supported by Elon University FR&D Full-Year, Full-Pay Sabbatical Award.

March, 2024: I recently got promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at Elon University.
