HOW TO GET A LIBRARY CARD
In-Person Use
Library Cards
If you live in Hammond, then you can get a library card by showing us a picture I.D. and proof of Hammond residence.
The easiest and most common type of I.D. is your driver’s license, so long as the information is up-to-date. Once we see this, you will fill out a library card application. You will sign the application accepting responsibility for the material that is borrowed with that card.

Children who are under the age of 14 need a parent or legal guardian present, but there is no age requirement for getting a Hammond Public Library card. Library cards are valid for two years before they must be renewed.
Student
Library Cards
Students of ANY school located in Hammond (charter, private, university) are eligible for a STUDENT card. Their schools may have already provided to them by the school and this library card is to be used. Student cards are valid for 1 year.
Online Borrower Library Cards
Users may register for an Online Borrower Card Number which allows select online access to Hammond Public Library eResources including OverDrive, Hoopla, Freegal, and CreativeBug for up to 72 hours from the date of submission. This number is for online access items only and does not provide checkouts for print or other physical items. An email will be sent to the email address you have provided with details about your physical Resident Library Card within 72 hours. Once a Resident Library Card is issued to you, the Online Borrower Card Number will be deactivated and digital items will not be accessible with the Online Borrower Card Number.
This service is for Hammond residents. If you are not a Hammond resident, then an eAccess card will be issued for digital access only.

Reciprocal
Library Cards
If you live in Lake County, then you can get a “Local Reciprocal” card. You will just have to show us the library card from your home library. If it is in good standing, we will ask to see your picture I.D. and proof of residence. You will then fill out a library card application, sign the application accepting responsibility for the material that is borrowed with that card, and you will then receive your Hammond Public Library card.
