The idea of reading for pleasure, even from the lowest grades, is to encourage choice and enjoyment, not to have the teacher decide which book EVERYONE will read. Would you want to be forced to read a book you aren't enjoying?
We do this with our students all of the time. We buy sets of readers and have the entire class read it. But why? Each student is different and likes different things. Instead, ask your principal for budget to expand your school's English Library. Add contemporary title every year. Add novels, readers, comic books, illustrated books. Ask your students what they enjoy reading in Hebrew, and find similar titles in English.
How may books do you own?
How many books would you say you've read in the last six months?
How many of those books did you choose for yourself?
What are the best three books you've ever read or had read aloud to you?
In your ideal book, what would the main character be like?
What are your favorite genres of books?
Who are your favorite authors these days?
Would you want to be forced to read a book you aren't enjoying?
We do this with our students all of the time. We buy sets of readers and have the entire class read it. But why? Each student is different and likes different things. The idea of free voluntary reading even from the lowest grades is to encourage choice and enjoyment, not to have the teacher decide which book EVERYONE will read.
Having the entire class read a book has value for reading comprehension and modeling, but it is not free voluntary reading or reading for pleasure. It has it's own value in the classroom, but it IS NOT reading for pleasure or free voluntary reading. It is comparable to a long reading comprehension passage which is learned over the space of a few weeks.
Find a book that suits you, in a spot that suits you, and just read.
We used to call it extensive reading, but the element of choice and the rejection of the formal written response during and post reading of the book has changed the lexis.
Have your students choose books and read - just read for pleasure.
Choose one of your younger classes to plan and run the event
Order materials - colored paper, scissors and even googly eyes and glue
Advertise the event with ads around school
Set up tables in a hallway or open public space in school
Have students man the tables explaining in English how to make them
Set up a laptop which is running the video on loop
Have each student in school finish his day with a monster/owl bookmark.
Make sure they bring them with their book to class the next day.
Request a bulletin board on a wall near the school office
Decorate it for book recommendations
Thumbtack a bag with small notes on it
Have students recommend books to other students
Google "book recommendation bulletin boards" for more examples
(If you Google "STOP DROP READ" you will find millions of successful programs around the world who are doing this! )
On Thursdays (every Thursday) at the 10AM break, someone says over the school loudspeaker:
And EVERYONE (principals, teachers, the guard at the gate, all of the students (even the stray cats)) :
That's it. Just that. Simple, Genius, Effective! So what are you waiting for?
