21st Century skills can only be acquired when the student gets out from behind the desk, and gets creative. Here are some of the skills your students will exercise while creating their book trailers.
1. Communicating
2. Evaluate
3. Solving problems
4. Creativity
5. Inspire
6. Use
This program is appropriate for both strong and weak students, from grades 7-12. Each student group can interpret the assignment at their own level, and show their best effort, both visually, and with as much English language as they can muster.
We recommend creating two contests: one for JHS, and one for HS. They key is that each one is celebrating the reading they have done, and is sharing that love with others. Within your reading for pleasure yearly plan, adding in this activity causes great enthusiasm and excitement. It is really easy to do.
1. Students read books - either individually or in groups of up to 3 students.
2. Teacher shows students samples of past book trailers to help them understand the task.
3. Students plan a film with the use of storyboards, and script-writing. Some decisions they need to make include:
teaser-trailers
dramatization
illustrated
something else?
4. Students record their book trailers, using their phones (check to see if they need permission to use phones in school)
5. Students edit and publish using "moviemaker" or similar program.
6. Have an event celebrating and voting on winning book trailers.
Have a good project planner. Look at this one as a sample
Start early in the year, in order to have time to develop ideas.
Make sure to have enough side-activities for the pupils who finish more quickly. Perhaps they can study words for the spelling bee!
Make the school aware of what we are doing. Raise awareness and excitement.
Plan a school-wide celebration. Invite parents.
