If you like the idea of #1photo50words , but are looking for more sheltered platform, this program is for you!
Photo-Chat-Padlet utilizes the same topic list as #1photo_50 words, but will be implemented in a “within class” platform, rather than on a public platform. Students will take a photo and write about it. They will then comment on classmates posts.
This project will allow your students to enjoy posting photos and comments on a beautiful platform in the privacy of your classroom environment.
This program is a good alternative for schools or students that do not condone communicating in a global social platform of social networking.
1. Teacher signs up for padlet by visiting https://padlet.com and following instructions.
2. Teacher opens a Padlet and names it with project name, and school name. For example: Photo-Chat-Padlet Neveh Channah
a. Click "Make a Padlet"
b. On the right hand menu, choose how you want your padlet to look. The Grid Layout is probably most appropriate, so that each student's post appears neatly next to the previous. Choose a background, too.
c. Scroll down in the menu to choose safety settings and allowances . See below for recommended settings.
3. Write a "Welcome" post to your students by clicking on the plus sign. Post the first topic. (list of topics are below.)
Get your students psyched! Tell them that they will be taking photos, practicing their writing and interacting with classmates in English through the amazing platform called Padlet!
There will be a topic for each week of the school year. Students may post on any day of that week, up until and including Friday.
Explain that the topic will be the trigger for the photo, and the photo will be a trigger for their writing.
Show them the next topic on the list at the bottom of this page. Brainstorm for what photo might represent this topic. Write a sample comment together on the board.
5. Each student opens a Padlet account, by visiting https://padlet.com/ and following instructions.
6. Student clicks "Join a Padlet" and pastes in the address that teacher shares with them.
7. Students upload a photo that relates to the weekly theme, and clicks on "Comment" to write a 50 word comment below the photo.
8. Instruct students to then comment on at least 2 other posts. See commenting guidelines, below.
9. At the beginning of the next week, teacher posts the next topic, and discusses with class for a few minutes before they begin again.
1. Attribution: ON You will see student name on each post.
2. New Post position: FIRST The newest posts will be visible at the top of the screen.
3. Collaboration: switch ON . In this way, students can comment on each others' postings.
4. Profanity Filter: switch ON.
5. Reactions: switch OFF. Competition and negative votes shouldn't come into plan in this project.
6. At the bottom of this menu, you will find the address of your Padlet. Save it, in order to share with your students.
7. Click NEXT at the top of the menu, and proceed to choose your privacy settings.
8. Choose SECRET. This means that anyone who has the address can join it. But it is not visible on the web.
You do not have to give grammatical/spelling feedback on their writing,
However, if you do decide that you want to give them editing feedback on their writing before they post it, be sure you tell them to submit it to you in time for you to relate to it and before the end of the week, so they can submit it before the end of the week.
You can provide a rubric for participation in the project, based on:
submitting relevant posts. You can decide how many posts they need to do per semester.
submitting on time
writing a sufficient comment below the photo (don't forget to define "sufficient")
commenting appropriately on 2 other posts.
If you want to refer to communicative ability, you may. This project is focused on increasing fluency, not necessarily accuracy.
