The goal of this rotation is to build a core knowledge base in POCUS, develop skill in acquiring and interpreting ultrasound images, and to construct a framework for clinical integration to allow you to effectively use bedside ultrasound in your daily patient care. The focus of this rotation will be on the foundational ultrasound applications:
EFAST
Cardiac
Thoracic
AAA
Biliary
Renal/Urinary Tract
Ultrasound-guided vascular access (with goal of performing and documenting 5 US-guided IVs),
however, majority of rotation scanning time should be devoted to diagnostic ultrasound
Attend faculty-led scan shifts
(refer to schedule e-mailed to you)
Self-scheduled independent scan shifts to gain further experience.
-You must complete >60 approved independent scans in Qpath during the 2-week rotation
-This includes 30 independent scans during Week 1 and another 30 independent scans during Week 2
-See required views and how to use Qpath for submissions
Monday QA/education meetings, generally 9am-1pm either in the Bayview ED 4th floor conference room or JHH ED offices at 1830 E. Monument Street

-Writing 2 multiple choice questions on any POCUS topic(s)

The POCUS rotation is a clinical rotation, and scheduling of other commitments (e.g. Step 3, personal) during the US rotation must be approved in advance by the US faculty. The rotation is designed to be flexible, and we can usually accommodate if you let us know in advance. In general, the trainee should plan to scan in the ED from Monday-Friday for at least 4-6 hours a day to be able to meet rotation requirements. Your independent scan shifts are self-scheduled and can take place anytime, as long as rotation requirements above are met.
