The run is held on Labor Day in Bettendorf. Each grade school does a Run with Carl practice the Friday before the event, right after school. The Carl D. Schillig Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 1998 to graduates of Pleasant Valley High School. In 2002, the same scholarship was also extended to graduates of Bettendorf High School.
School Pictures – A professional photographer will take pictures twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Fall pictures will be used in the yearbook.
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP Assessment) – These computerized tests are adaptive and administered to students in grades 3-6 in the fall, winter (optional) and the spring. Subjects assessed are Reading and Mathematics. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level. More info can be found at the following website: http://www.nwea.org/support/article/930/parent-toolkit.
Reflections- Since 1969, the PTA Reflections program has encouraged millions of students across the nation to explore their artistic talents by creating original works of art for fun and recognition. All students are encouraged to submit works of art relating to the year’s theme in one or more of the six categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. The theme and contest guidelines are sent home in September with an October due date. The district recognizes all students that have entered the Reflections contest at a reception in January at the Pleasant Valley High School.

Iowa Assessments - Iowa Assessments are administered to students in grades 1-6 grade each fall. The data from the assessment can be used to understand how students perform in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. They also help identify a student’s strengths and limitations in each of the listed subject areas. The assessment allows the school and parents to monitor student performance over time, compare student performance to other students in the nation and provide information about a student’s proficiency level as defined by the state of Iowa.
Halloween Party & Parade - Students are encouraged to bring their Halloween costume to school on a designated day. They will put their costumes on at school. The classes will parade through the playground area where parents can attend and see all of the costumes. Parent-Teacher Conferences - Conferences are held in the fall and spring. Parents and teachers are given 20 minutes to discuss the progress of each student.
Book Fair – Our book fair raises funds for the classrooms at Hopewell. It also gives students and teachers the opportunity to add Scholastic books to their collections. Teachers fill out wish lists at the book fair allowing families to purchase books for a specific classroom if they choose. The book fair is held twice a year in conjunction with Parent-Teacher Conferences. Students will be given time during the school day to review the book fair and make a list of books they might be interested in purchasing.
VIP/Grandparent’s Day - Students may invite grandparents or other special visitors to school. The visitors will go to the students' classrooms from 1:30-2:45 to experience fun activities that the students and grandparents/VIPs can participate in together. This event gives our guests a peak into the daily life of a Hopewell student.
Teacher Appreciation Week - While there are many ways we will be honoring our teachers throughout the year, there is one tradition in particular that is a favorite of both the children and the teachers. On a specified day, each child is asked to bring a flower for their teacher. Flowers do not need to be purchased, as they can be from your yard. The teachers love getting this vase of flowers, and the kids love seeing their creation! The PTA organizes events during this week for the staff as well.
Flag Ceremony Day - Hopewell students, teachers and staff gather around our flag pole in front of the school to pay tribute to our country and to salute the men and women who bravely serve in our military. This annual ceremony is our last Character Circle meeting of the year. Traditionally, with help from the Le Claire American Legion Post 347, we honor Hopewell’s 5th grade American Legion Flag Essay winner. We will also reflect on our work with the Character Counts Pillars of Character, with special significance given to the pillar of Citizenship. Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to the event. Veterans and active military men and women are invited to come and be honored during our program.
6th Grade Science Camp – This two day, overnight camp has been a part of Pleasant Valley’s environmental education program for over 25 years and supports not only science education in the district but also the development of independence, responsibility, and social skills. Students are afforded the opportunity to fish at the Hurstville Interpretive Center and collect chemical and biological water data for the Iowa Water Program. They study pond and stream ecosystems at Camp Wyoming by wading through aquatic environments and examining captured organisms. Owl calling, pellet dissection, and a night walk have been added to help students learn more about the lives of various nocturnal animals. The list of activities is long and varied. Most are specifically designed around cooperative learning strategies including a team building challenge hike that highlights the first day’s events. The camp encompasses such a wide range of educational and social values that we feel very strongly about continuing its tradition. It allows all students to flourish in a natural setting and provides a wonderful lasting memory for all who participate.
Until recently, students would pay a fee of $33.00 for this camp to cover some of the expenses such as the use of the camp, lodging, three meals, and necessary supplies. The Iowa Department of Education has determined that schools can no longer require students to pay for school-sponsored field trips that are considered a part of the required district curriculum. The sixth grade outdoor education camp falls under this rule. The district supports the continuation of the camp experience, but the overall cost of the program is too great for the district to absorb. Therefore, the district asks that each family consider a tax deductible gift/contribution to help support the offering of this program. More information is sent to 6th grade families in January.
Hopewell Hoorah - A fun celebration held the day before the last day of school. Kids will enjoy a day filled with inflatable games, activities, and more, making it fantastic way to celebrate the end of the school year!
