Exclusive Interview with Dr. Gopa Shome

Ph.D (Honoris Causa)

Question: What inspired you to enter into Biofertilizer?

Answer: During my childhood, I had been watching my Mother to have an unconditional love for plants and I was particularly impressed to see my Mother making compost, at that time. When, I grew up, the detrimental effect of chemical fertilizer shocked me, and that’s why I have been fascinated by Azollasp, growing easily in different waterbodies, and accumulating a no. of beneficial elements like Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium to serve as a efficient biofertilizer.

Question: Since how long, you been into this scientific field and in which cities you have been associated for administration, entrepreneurship, teaching, research, commercial and training programs?

Answer: I have joined as a J.R.F. under The University of Burdwan, Burdwan, Paschim Banga, India in the year 1992 and appointed an Asstt. Teacher in S.N. Balika Vidyalaya, Baidyabati, Hooghly, Paschim Banga, India in the month of May,1996 and thereafter Lecturer in Botany, in B.N. Mahavidyalaya, Itachuna, Hooghly, Paschim Banga in the month ofMay,1997 and finally Lecturer in Botany in Bethune College, Kolkata(WBES), Paschim Banga, India in the month of Nov, 1997.Then it was quite impossible to me to submit my thesis, as I tried to discharge my duties sincerely and my research work had been neglected for a long time. My name has been registeredand registered for the same. In the year 2010, lastly, I was able to submit my thesis after a lot of troubles.

At present, I have been appointed an Associate Professor, at Chandernagore College, Chandernagore, Hooghly, Paschim Banga, India. I acted as the Head of the Department of Botany for more than three years.

A Minor Research project( funded by University Grants Commission ) was also was carried out by me at Chandernagore, Hooghly, Paschim banga, India.

Question: What are your future plans for administration, entrepreneurship, teaching, research and training programs in Biofertilizer?

Answer: Nowadays, we are facing a severe environmental conditions and are being threatened by the direct ingestion of adulterated foods and intake of contaminants through food chain or water intake. To combat with the ever increasing population, by the application of chemical fertilizer, a great achievements have been made worldwide in agricultural production, still many challenges remain unresolved to ensure environmental sustainability and food security. So, my future plan is to save our planet from different kinds of harmful effects of chemical fertilizer, more uses of cost effective and eco friendly biofertilizer should be considered as a safe alternative to chemical fertilizer.

Question: What kind of businesses can be started in Biofertilizer? What minimum infrastructure would it need?

Answer: Global market for biofertilizer is categorized into nitrogen fixing, phosphate solubilizing etc.

Market scope of Azollasp is vast, as it is mainly used as nitrogen fixing Bio-fertilizer for Rice, and Rice is a prominent crop in many countries namely India, China, Indonesia, Brazil, Japan and others, thus enhancing the market for nitrogen fixing biofertilisers.

But, I just want to develop entrepreneurship for the welfare of the society. I want to transfer my technologies to the skilled practitioner so that they can apply these technologies and society can be benefitted. Proper manpower is only needed to make the infrastructure.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve syllabus of Biofertilizer for more creativity, applications and opportunities

Answer: Regarding the Syllabus, my recommendation is to give emphasis on practical skills that allow the students to perform research and pursue jobs and lead effectively within the organization.

Question: What is Biofertilizer? What are the major branches in Biofertilizer?

Answer: Biofertilizer is living microorganisms, may be of algal, fungal, bacterial origin, which promotes plant growth by increasing nutrient availability and acquisition. The microbe-based fertilizer is considered to be the crucial component of sustainable agriculture, with long lasting effects on soil fertility.

Major branches of Biofertilizer is algal biofertilizer, Fungal biofertilizer and bacterial biofertilizer.

Question: What are your recommendations to frame guidelines on funding of research projects on Biofertilizer?

Answer: Central Government of India fund, MSMME, may be appropriate in this regard.

Question: How can universities produce revolutionary PhD and Post Doc thesis and dissertations on Biofertilizer? What are your recommendations to improve the academic standards?

Answer: Professional skills of Teaching and Research Staff of Universities has to be upgraded in Biofertilizer sector. Entrepreneurs willing to do fertilizer business has to be started up.

But, in our country, there is not so much scope to make such an endeavour, but some of the institutes can do it.

Question: How can students seek job and career opportunities in Biofertilizer?

Answer: There is a need for vocational education and training in Biofertilizer sector.

Question: What job titles are available in Biofertilizer?

Answer: Sales and Marketing Executive, Export Executive, Field operation Executive, Business Development Executive. Microbiologist, Analyst, Technical Officer.

Question: Which are Typical employers in Biofertilizer?

Answer Global biofertilizers market is of different categories depending on the type, form, crop type, application, types of microbe etc, Similarly, India biofertilizers market is categorized into different categories on the basis of type of biofertilizer, form of biofertilizer too.

Major players operating in the global biofertilizers market are Novozymes A/S, CBF China BiofertilizerAG, Agrilife, Biomax etc.

In India there are several companies such as Multiplex Group at Bengaluru (Headquarter), Coromandel International Limited headquartered at Secunderabad, Camson Bio Technologies Limited headquartered at Bangalore.

Question: Which are the courses available in Biofertilizer?

Certificate Course in Biofertilizer Production, Certificate program in Biofertilizer and biopesticide

Dr. Gopa Shome is influencing journals in Biofertilizer-

Agrotechnology journals; Journal of Food and Industrial Microbiology; Biofertilizers and Biopesticides; Rice Research: Open Access; Pesticides and BioFertilizers.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class research article in Biofertilizer? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer

Sustainable agriculture, soil fertility, plant tolerance and Productivity should be emphasized.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class review in Biofertilizer? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer my recommendation is that after extensive research work, identifying more suitable strains, developing better technologies for more production and adopting quality control measures for wide commercialization a review should be written to make it a world class.

Question: What are your recommendations to establish a world class research institute for Biofertilizer?

Answer An Institute having a very good infrastructure can be established successfully.

Question: What are your recommendations to resolve Russia- Ukrain conflict?

Answer: Russia- Ukrain conflict is a severe problem. We feel very bad. It should be resolved through mutual understanding. Wanting peace not war should be followed

Question: Would you start a campaign to request government to offer free of cost internet to all people of your country as fundamental right, because it plays a significant role in education, awareness, implementation of government policies and economic development of country

Answer: I didn’t think of anything like that, because there must be some disadvantages also.

Question: What are your recommendations to authors, who are writing Books on Biofertilizer for more creativity and understanding of the subject?

Answer: The books should be easy to understand. latest information should be incorporated as far as possible with proper reference.

Question: What according to you are the Top 5 major challenges (research problems) which need to be resolved urgently by world’s scientists in the area of Biofertilizer?

Answer: To draw the attention of the Government towards efficacy of Biofertilizer

To generate more manpower and to produce pure organic food stuff.

To make skilled craftsmen

Need to arrange high and attractive salary for the labour at lower level

Rice-Duck-Azolla-fish cultivation should be adopted to boost Farmers’ incomes, reduce environmental impact and improve the food security
