Calf Barns

Legacy Dairy has built 4 calf barns that have given us the opportunity to get rid of all the calf huts and allow the calves to live in community groups. The barns have two automated feeders each that allow for 4 calves to eat simultaneously whenever they want. Calves are growing faster in the barns than in the huts. The faster they grow, the better they will do to ward off illness and ultimately become a healthy cow. We love to give tours if you are interested to visit, by appointment only.

FRIENDLY CALVES

The calves love visitors! They will give you kisses and attention. Many tours come through to have a personal experience and leave slobbered and loved.

SAFE CALVES

This barn setting allows for less calves getting out of their area and having to chase them back into their huts. It also allows for calves to be protected better from the elements (storms, snow, heat, etc.).

HEALTHY CALVES

Calves now can eat whenever they want. There is a RFID tag that is read by the machine and the calf is given the amount that is right for each individual calf. They are allowed to come in and eat every 2 hours and some calves take advantage of every allotment given.

The group living for calves starts day one. Calves are trained by patient care givers who carefully walk them to the feeder and teach them how to eat on the feeder all by themselves. It takes most calves about three days and they figure out the process. For those calves that need some extra time to figure it out, our workers find them and help teach them a few days longer.
