Mining San Benito River
Hollister Guardians opposes the re-open of Sandman Mine (aka Nash Rd. Quarry), located near Westside Blvd., a mostly Latino neighborhood. The mine stopped operating in 1989. This is a sand and gravel mine owned by Starr Concrete, which wants to use products from this mine at its Silicon Valley concrete plants. Residents in Hollister's Westside neighborhood will be negatively impacted by dust, noise, and truck traffic from the mining operation. Mining the San Benito River will also affect wildlife in the area and contribute to silt downstream in the Pajaro River.Â
Hollister Guardians will comment and consider future actions as the Sandman Mine seeks approval from the County for the amendment to its 1977 Reclamation Plan. This approval is necessary before it can obtain County permits to reopen the mine. The County recently revised its Reclamation regulations to help the Sandman Mine secure approval.
