Probably the most valuable thing I learned in this class was not a particular tool to use, but how to create an online learning community. I am not a huge fan of people, and I am very selective about which ones I will work with. This problem is exacerbated by the limitations of technology, so it was interesting to read in the text that much of what I was feeling was unique to me. I generally despise icebreakers. When I go to conferences, I find a corner to sit in. If I don’t understand something, I will look it up before I consider asking for help. But, since I have been taking online courses I have felt the need to know the people I am working with. The text mentions that students in physical classrooms would meet up after class at coffee shops or libraries. This has not been my experience. I don’t even hang out in the hall to talk to people after a meeting. However, in online classes, I relish the opportunity to talk about myself and listen to others.
