At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the process of enrolling students is magical and unique. Here's how it works:
Hogwarts Acceptance Letter: When the child turns 11, he/she will receive an acceptance letter. This letter is delivered by an owl, a common form of communication in the wizarding world. The letter informs the child (and their family) that they have been accepted to Hogwarts for magical education. The letter typically arrives just before the start of the school year.
Special Arrangements for Muggle-borns: For children born to non-magical families (Muggles), Hogwarts provides extra guidance. A member of the staff, such as Professor McGonagall, may personally visit the family to explain the magical world and Hogwarts' existence. They also help with logistical concerns, such as acquiring school supplies from Diagon Alley.
No Entrance Exams: Unlike some schools, Hogwarts does not require entrance exams. A child's magical ability itself qualifies them for entry. Once they receive their letter, they are free to attend.
Getting to Hogwarts: Your Journey Begins
Platform 9¾
Each year, students make their way to Hogwarts aboard the iconic Hogwarts Express, which departs from Platform 9¾ at King's Cross Station, London. Accessible only to those with magical insight, Platform 9¾ is a hidden platform that students reach by passing directly through the barrier between Platforms 9 and 10.
Departing promptly at 11 o'clock on September 1st, the Hogwarts Express is a charming, red steam engine that takes students on a scenic journey through the British countryside. As the train whistles and rolls past rolling hills, lush forests, and winding rivers, students settle into cozy compartments where they can make new friends, catch up with classmates, and sample delicious treats from the Honeydukes Trolley—including classics like Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.
Upon arrival at Hogsmeade Station, first-year students are traditionally escorted across the Great Lake in enchanted boats led by Hogwarts' Keeper of Keys and Grounds, offering a breathtaking first view of the castle’s soaring towers and turrets. Older students make their way to the castle by enchanted carriages pulled by Thestrals, creatures visible only to those who have witnessed true loss, adding an air of mystery to the final leg of the journey.
