Samuel Northrup and Angeline Castle (née Tenney) were members of the eighth company of missionaries who sailed from Boston on December 14, 1836, on the barque named Mary Frazier. Upon arrival in Hawaiʻi, S.N. Castle became the Assistant Superintendent of Secular Affairs under Levi Chamberlain. Angeline Castle died in 1841, and in 1842 S.N. Castle married Angeline's younger sister, Mary Tenney. Castle was involved on the business side of the Hawaiian Mission, called "temporal necessities."
In 1851, Mr. Castle left the ABCFM and went into business with fellow missionary Amos S. Cooke, under the name of Castle & Cooke. Mr. Castle was in incorporator of Haiku Plantation on Maui and Kohala Sugar Company on island of Hawaiʻi. Moreover, he was trustee and treasurer for Punahou School for twenty years, served in the House of Representatives from 1864-1865, and was a member of the Privy Council from from 1863 - 1874. He also was appointed to the House of Nobles by King Kalākaua and served from 1876-1880.
S.N. Castle became a naturalized citizen in 1853, and immediately began aiding in the push for annexation by the U.S. as a staunch opposer of French and British claims in the Pacific. Castle was supportive of the 1887 Constitution (i.e., the Bayonet Constitution), but played no active role in its implementation. Samuel's son, William R. Castle, was a member of the Committee of Safety.
