Getting Your License

Motorcycle Rider Licensing

If you have and existing motorcycle license, you may be able to get it transferred to a HK motorcycle license directly.

If not, you will need to obtain your motorcycle license by completing both written and practical tests.

If you already have your car license, you can skip the written road code test.

The general process is:

  • Register for a motorcycle school
  • Complete 3 x 4hr lessons which teach operation of the motorcycle, basic road conduct, and practice for the Competency Test
  • Competency Test - ~6weeks from the start of school registration. This tests your ability to control and operate a motorcycle with competence. Successful riders will qualify to ride on some public roads with an L plate at certain times of the day: Mon – Fri (6:00am to 7:30am and 9:30am to 4:30pm and 7:30pm to 11:30pm). Sat (6:00am to 7:30am and 9:30am to 11:30pm). Sunday & Public Holidays (6:00am to 11:30pm). A map of the roads that L Plate riders are prohibited to use is here: L Plate Prohibited Roads

Here is an information about the actual plate you need to add to the front and back of the bike in order to ride on the road as a learner:

The vehicle shall have securely fixed, at the front and rear, a white plate 250 millimetres by 250 millimetres on which shall appear in red the letter “L” with arms 200 millimetres long and 25 millimetres in width and within the arms and occupying an area 125 millimetres by 125 millimetres shall also appear in red the Chinese character “學”。

  • Complete 1 x 4hour lesson that introduces and practice for the Road Test
  • Road Test - Usually ~6months from the start of school registration. This includes the Figure 8 on a slope and road route. Successful riders will qualify to get the P plate license. Riders can ride on all roads at all times, however not exceed 70kph and not permitted to carry a pillion passenger. Any traffic offences committed which carry demerit points (i.e. parking tickets don't count, however running a red light, and speeding etc do), ad an additional 6months to the standard 12mth P plate period. Any subsequent infringements, the rider will need to start the licensing test procedure from the start! After completing the 12 month P plate period, the rider is able to convert their P license to a full license at the transport dept. without completing any further tests.
