Hong Kong Association of Dance Medicine and Science
2016年10月,International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) Hong Kong Association of Dance Medicine and Science (HKADMS)。
Three pillars
To enhance the health, performance and well-being of dancers and dance professionals through high quality scientific knowledge, evidence-based practice, access to first class specific healthcare and dance science support service in Hong Kong.
1. To improve the knowledge and skills of medical professionals in the management of dance injury.
2. To increase the awareness of the role of medical professionals in dance injury.
3. To promote education and research in dance medicine.
4. To improve the performance and well-being of dance professionals.
5. To provide a platform of communication and collaboration of medical professionals and dance professionals.
6. To promote international links with other international societies in dance medicine.
7. To advocate the government in enhancing the medical care of dancers and dance professional.
Dancers are the perfect combination of artists and athletes. Therefore, just like all types of athletes, dancers, especially professional ones, are injury-prone with the high-intensity rehearsal. In general, up to 70% dancers are suffering from injured inflicted during dance training or performance, be it mild or major, an acute or chronic one. (Motta-Valencia, 2006)
This would in turn impair a dancer’s performance on stage, and worst of it all, putting an end to one’s dance career. In order to prevent such tragedy, dance medicine was developed back in 1970-80s which was an Orthopedic subspecialty initially to treat dance-related injuries.(Kravitz, 1984). And throughout the years, dance medicine has experienced an exponential growth with more and more professionals being involved, such as dance coaches, choreographers, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, nutritionist etc.
To top that, the field of study has evolved from treating dance injuries only to a much wider perspective, including injuries prevention, performance enhancement, psychological preparation etc. Now dance medicine is considered as a subdivision of performing art medicine, which brings a more holistic care for dancers (Miller, 2006)
It is well known to us that dance is an art which manifests through body movement, but the science of it – what is that?
Just like any other scientific discipline, dance science is the study of dance and dancer, in a quantitative and systemic manner.
Similar to modern dance medicine, it consists of a wide variety of topics, which covers scientific aspects like anatomy, biomechanics and physiology ; performance-related aspects such as choreography, conditioning, scheduling ; and training-related like coaching, nutrition, psychology etc.
Currently, there are a number of bachelor, diploma and even master course available for enthusiastic dancers to pursue this field of study. Locally, there is Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts; Internationally, there are institutes in UK (University of Bedfordshire, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Royal Academy of Dance), US (UCLA, Cornish College of the Arts,Ohio University) and Europe (University of Bern from Switzerland, Universidad Europea de Madrid from Spain, Utrecht university from Netherlands).
