Major/Minor
and why I chose them!
and why I chose them!
I’m currently majoring in Exercise Science with a minor in Health Psychology at IU Indianapolis. I’m passionate about becoming an occupational therapist, a path that combines my love for kids with my desire to help people live healthier, more independent lives.
I actually started college as a Biology major, thinking it was the best path to a healthcare career. But the more I learned, the more I realized it didn’t match what I was truly passionate about. I’ve always been more interested in how people move, how injuries heal, and how physical activity can change lives, especially for kids. That’s what led me to switch to Exercise Science, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It feels like a better fit for who I am and how I want to help others.
Now, I’m learning about the body in ways that actually excite me, like movement science, rehab techniques, and how to work directly with patients. My PT aide job gives me hands-on experience that connects to what I learn in class, and my internship with Dr. Kochhar is helping me understand healthcare systems and education, too. All of these pieces are helping me grow into a future pediatric occupational therapist, and I feel more motivated than ever knowing I’m finally on the right path.
I chose Health Psychology as my minor because of how much I’ve personally seen mental health impact physical well-being. After struggling with anxiety and depression, especially during my first year of college, I started to understand how important it is to treat the whole person, not just their body, but their mind, too. That experience made me want to support kids not only through physical therapy, but also by understanding what they’re going through emotionally.
Right now, what I’m learning in my health psych classes is already changing how I think about patient care. It’s helping me develop more empathy and better communication skills, especially when it comes to working with kids who are scared or overwhelmed. I know that understanding their mindset and emotional needs will make me a more effective and compassionate occupational therapist in the future.
I'm excited to dive into topics like stress management, health behavior theories, and the mind-body connection. Pursuing a minor in health psychology isn't just about checking off boxes on my degree plan. it's about my passion for understanding the full spectrum of what it means to be healthy and helping others achieve that too.
