Mixed Media by Doris Doku

"Shelter" / 18 x 24 inches / pencil

This piece is in reference to the some of my paintings about shearing sheep wool and how the wool symbolically can be protective and also be a hindrance to new growth.

Untitled / Procreate

I always enjoy dabbling in digital medium so I wanted to try out different ways to have conversations with the figure, color, light, and values. The person I am using as a reference here is @IamHogoe on Twitter. She’s amazing

"Nurture" / 4 ft x 3 ft / Oil on canvas

This piece was part of my senior thesis show and it related to my personal trauma and self identity. Within this piece I am taking the role of the black Madonna and re nurturing myself with love and empathy

"Her" / Procreate

As a plus sized black woman I don’t really see a lot of powerful pieces that emulate black women in a statuesque light so I took inspiration from my favorite plus sized model @NAO on social media and created this digital portrait of her to my liking.

"Community" / 18 in x 24 in / ink

This piece was in relation to the importance of hair and the black community specifically with black women. We as a community bond a lot through hair and there’s so much history, love, and trauma in terms of how we express ourselves through our hair.
