Warn Family – Mortis Street
Family consisting of 2 young children and their parents that died in 1872
John Warn (died aged 28)
Marcella Warn (died aged 24)
Matilda Mary Warn (died aged 3 years)
John Ernest Warn (died aged 20 months)
John Warn (father) was a grazier around Crookwell and worked alongside his brother, Henry, who lived with them. Henry was not present the night of the family's death
Marcella's family owned and ran the Argyle Inn, situated where Newo House is located
The family had purchased "Young Waverly", a race horse, from out west. The horse was stolen by the bushranger Ben Hall and his gang in 1865, before it was killed in a shootout.
John, Marcella, Matilda Mary, and John Ernest all died overnight on a cold night. After they had closed the windows and door, the family lit a small charcoal fire in a dish, as their house lacked a fireplace. The family died overnight from the resulting carbon monoxide fumes.
Footstone has a cut down tree on it to symbolise the family tree dying out all at once
