Welcome to Hairstyling and Aesthetics at Heydon Park! I am Ms.Elson and I teach Hairstyling & Aesthetics (Also known as Cosmetology or Cosmo).
A little about my professional background:
For the past 21 years, I have had the great fortune of working in the truly rewarding career of Hairstyling & Aesthetics, while networking with a culturally, ethnically, and professionally diverse community of influential and creative individuals- both colleagues and clients, and students along the way. I fervently believe that learning is lifelong, and the power of a growth mindset can take you extremely far. Hairstyling & Aesthetics includes the fields of Arts, Science, Business and Public Relations. As a result, I have continuously upgraded and expanded my skills and knowledge base and sought opportunities to broaden my experience and challenge myself professionally and personally. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts from York University as well as a Bachelor of Education in Technological Education from University of Windsor, I have credentials and experience in many aspects of Hairstyling & Aesthetics, Small Business & Spa Management, Sales & Marketing, Budgeting & Finance, Social Media, Customer Relations, Health & Safety and Product Development. Furthermore, I am a licensed hairstylist, Master Colourist, Multi-ethnic hairstyle specialist, licensed holistic practitioner & OCT licensed teacher.
MS. Elson's Teaching Vision & Philosophy
My vision as a teacher is to empower and inspire my students and to provide them with opportunities for personal growth, problem solving and professional and personal skills acquisition. In addition, I am eager to help them explore the wide range of career opportunities and professional growth that can be found in the incredibly diverse field of Hairstyling and Aesthetics.
My personal teaching philosophy is centered on growth (big and small) being evidence of learning. I believe that students need to be taught through a lens of joy, positivity, and encouragement. I also believe that all students deserve an opportunity to be successful, which means a learning environment must be solidly founded on a base that is committed to, actively engages in, and exuberantly promotes and celebrates equity and diversity.
Therefore, to create a diverse and equitable learning environment for all students, I will ensure the following will be incorporated into my classroom: socially and culturally diverse learning experiences; hands-on (kinesthetic) learning and multi-faceted UDL teaching methods. Examples of this are, but not limited to; multimedia lessons; literacy integrated lessons and assignments; cultural exploration; collaborative and independent projects; integration with STEM, Arts, Humanities and Business; live demonstrations; Community Centred Experiential Learning Workshops, videos and print images; class discussions; Culturally Responsive and Relevent Pedegody, research, problem solving and real-life application. This can produce a sense of empowerment and motivation to explore new skills and global competencies. In addition, the skills, knowledge and experiences that will be explored will be transferable and not limited to the field of Hairstyling & Aesthetics.
