Student Exemplars

A recent project in Astronomy found my students creating children's books about the telescopes they were learning about. In the example below, you'll find a few of the books that rated the highest with their elementary readers.

One of the most creative upgrades I've made in my Biology classroom was to the Genetics unit. I wanted to be able to offer the students an opportunity to learn the newer Biotechnology techniques that are being used in Genetics and Molecular Biology now, not just the same old Punnett Squares and pedigrees. After hours & hours of planning, and re-imagining the flow of 3 Biology units, I was finally where I needed to be. The info-graphics from the 2nd unit that I developed resulted in some truly amazing student work samples. You can see them below. Thanks to Stacy Yung for the info-graphic inspiration, Matt Miller of Ditch that Textbook and Kasey Bell of ShakeUpLearning for keeping me inspired all year, and Cap Aguilar my Better Lessons coach for the support and feedback she gave to help me to make these improvements.

GIFs and Stellar Spectra

In the fall of 2019, still trying to incorporate the 4 C's into my classroom, I searched the Hyperdocs website to find some inspiration. I was getting more comfortable with providing students with more self-paced lessons by using Hyperdocs for lesson delivery, but still hadn't been brave enough to find ways for students to share their work with a more authentic audience. I remembered hearing about www.talltweets.com on one of the podcasts I listen to (Educational Duct Tape with Jake Miller). Tall Tweets is a website that allows you to turn your Google Slide Decks into GIFs in just a couple of easy steps. With that in mind, a had my Astronomy students learn about the 3 types of stellar spectrum through reading text, doing labs and activities, and watching videos. After they were finished they each created a Slide deck to upload as a "Tall Tweet". The activity turned out to be a success. You can see their creations below.

Astronomy - Learning about Light Meets Flipgrid

This year in Astronomy class (2019) I made a choice to incorporate Flipgrid. What a great venue for the students to be able to show what the students know. Above you will see a couple of videos made by students that explain how light it produced from electrons.
