Groups and Activities

20/20 Social Group

The 20/20 Social Group caters for those aged 20 upwards. We meet on the third Saturday of each month for social activities such as tenpin bowling, safari supper, BBQ, games evening, theatre trip, quiz, video evening, etc. The meetings take place in someone's home, usually with a shared supper unless it is a trip out. There is no formal membership and anyone is welcome to turn up. Full details of each event will be given nearer the actual date.

Churchyard Gardening Group

The churchyard is maintained by a keen group of local volunteers. Are you in a position to do some volunteer gardening for a couple of hours each week (or month) at Heslington Church?

Flowers and Banners Group

The church is very appreciative of the beautiful floral displays produced each week. These are arranged by members of the flower group, who also are instrumental in the creation - and sometimes restoration - of our seasonal banners. Anyone who might be interested in getting involved is most welcome, perhaps to celebrate an anniversary or in memory of a loved one.

To volunteer, please contact Deirdre Hopwood on 01904 489261 / deirdrehopwood@yahoo.co.uk. The group usually meets to decorate the church on a Friday morning.

Friends Plus

Friends Plus meets twice a month on Wednesday afternoons in each other's homes for friendship, tea and discussion on a Christian theme.  The group doesn't meet during August, but resumes mid-September after the summer break. Please contact Anne Mott on 01904 206958 or Elisa Main on 07745 2571792 / elisamain@yahoo.co.uk for details.

Mothers' Union

Mothers' Union meets on the third Thursday of each month at 2 pm in the meeting room with a varied programme of speakers. There is a summer outing in July and a Christmas lunch in December. They also meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 am for a corporate Communion in the church followed by Bible study. The branch, attached to the York Deanery, welcomes everyone and supports overseas members and local charities.

Music Group

We have a small and very committed singing group of around ten members, with all four vocal parts represented. The group arose from a need for the church to get to know the newer hymns/songs in 'Singing the Faith', which had been fairly recently introduced and which contained some interesting new material. We sing before the service (albeit not every week) to lead into worship and, before lockdown, during Communion. Our efforts seem to be appreciated (at least people say so) . We also have a small instrumental group, which accompanies the service from time to time. More instruments, especially to combine with the singers, would be most welcome. We have a rota of three organists who provide a sterling service. Anyone interested in joining the rota, please see Anne Mott; anyone who would like to use the organ for occasional practice, please see the vicar as he has the church diary.
