Oil stains on white clothing can be tricky, but with the right approach, you can remove them effectively without damaging the fabric. The key is to act quickly, as fresh stains are easier to treat than those that have set in.
First, blot the stained area gently with a clean paper towel or cloth to absorb as much excess oil as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the oil deeper into the fibres. Next, sprinkle a generous amount of absorbent powder such as talcum powder, cornflour, or even bicarbonate of soda onto the stain. Allow it to sit for at least 15–20 minutes before brushing it off – this helps draw out the oil.
Once you’ve lifted the initial residue, pre-treat the stain with a small amount of liquid dishwashing detergent or a stain remover designed for grease. Massage it gently into the fabric and let it rest for around 10 minutes. Afterwards, wash the garment in the hottest water safe for the fabric, following the care label instructions.
If the stain persists, repeat the process before tumble-drying, as heat can set oil stains permanently. With patience and the right treatment, white clothes can be restored to their original freshness.
