The Story of Helheim
With tall structures of stone and masonry that loom over the tree line in the Northwestern reach of Sincadere, Helheim, serves as the bastion of law and civilization for the many humans and diverse creatures that call it home. Despite the impressive fortifications that demarcate it's boundaries, Helheim is but a shadow of it's former glory. It was once rife with wonders of magic and technology that served the citizens of the town. The city stood as a shining utopia that dazzled the world with feats of magic that made men almost live as Gods. But in time, they grew arrogant in their magical pursuits. Their technology was twisted and abused for darker and darker tasks. These machines of ill-design by their maligned masters were intended to propel some of their creators to Godhood. The final frontier of human achievement. But alas, as with the story of Icarus, by flying too close to the sun, they damned themselves back to the pit. About 300 years ago, these experiments failed so disastrously that waves of pure energy convulsed the city once made of gold and silver and in minutes reduced it instantly to rubble. The explosions of the last machines shot a terrible red glow above the city and incinerated over half the mortal souls inhabiting it in the snap of a finger. Those who'd been spared such a cruel fate swore it would never happen again....
Over time, the city was rebuilt. It changed, however, from a technocratic paradise, to a superstitious, feudal, and an absolute monarchy that was administered by the Spurius family. This noble line has existed for over 800 years. The last reigning king of that line was a young and ambitious man named Tyr Spurius. The course of his reign saw strife, war, and hardship with good and evil alike. Over time, however, both the king and his kingdom became less superstitious and suspicious. Magic itself as well as those magical creatures who came to settle from worlds far away were happy to conform to the laws of the land once welcomed under better terms.Â
Eventually King Tyr's adventurous heart called him to step away from the throne to explore other lands in order to seek out anything that would continue to aid and protect his beloved Helheim. In his place, he appointed the unicorn Belle to rule as his ward and honorary Queen. A former baker and previous founder of the Head of Merchant caste and Trade Services Guild; Queen Belle is soft spoken and kind but fiercely protective of the people of Helheim. Under her rule the city had become even more welcoming to all who wished to abide in the kingdom based on laws, logic and a sense of community. The kingdom under her rule persevered in the face of threats from any number of enemies and came together to survive and thrive no matter the situation; providing a haven for trade and healing for the entire land of Sincadere.
Following this saw King Tyr return from his travels to reclaim his throne- as though answering the call of his heart to serve his people and continue his father's legacy. A time of peace was gifted to the Kingdom, allowing Helheim to build armies and navies: discovering new technologies under the keen eye of Queen Laya. A romantic partnership of fairytale proportions, the once human only Kingdom followed King Tyr and his elven wife, Queen Laya, breaking down racial barriers and becoming the diverse nation it is today. King Tyr with his courage and boyish charms, leading alongside Queen Laya and her brilliant mind for all things legal and curious. This time saw a political shift in Helheim, as Ministers and Nobles alike took the reigns of the administration: ensuring the Kingdom was never an uninteresting place to have an opinion. The Duchess of Helheim, Buulzibael, was tasked with shepherding this political landscape on behalf of the King.
Now, times have changed once more. King Tyr has given up his power to pursue his wife and family across the sea: a new world of adventures for the famous royal family and thus ending their line's claim to the throne. The King generously passed on his crown to the Duchess, proud to leave it within her care. Previously an administrator of the King's will and loyal servant to Tyr, Queen Buulzibael is a playful yet cunning monarch known for her love of books, bureaucracy and mischief. Quickly gathering the support of the Nobility... the Queen has taken trusted ally Field Marshal Tamina Aurora on as second-in-command. Having risen through the ranks of the local militia and developed the Royal Guard into a modern military under the previous Queen Laya's innovations, the Field Marshal was a strategic choice for Queen Buulzibael to enlist for both her military strength and keen mind for politics. The Kingdom of Helheim once more marches towards a new era. Noble houses rise and fall: all in the grand pursuit of commerce, innovation and conquest. It's an exciting time to get involved...
